Because I can no longer get 22mag ammo at a decent price I am considering selling my cz 22mag once my supply of 22mag ammo is depleted.I know that I can purchase 22mag ammo but at the price it is now selling for is it really worth it since 223 ammo is ABout the same price and much easier to get.I have a cz 223 carbine and a cz 7.62 carbine that I enjoy very much. What would you guys do?

Do you want the gun, do you like the gun? Or, do you not like it and are using ammo shortages as an excuse to get rid of it?

I think if you dont want it any more, sell it.. no use in keeping something you dont like.

If you like the gun and enjoy shooting it, then I think it is kind of extreme to sell it over a short-term ammo supply problem. Just put it to the back of the safe and shoot your other guns. One day you'll be walking through a LGS and see a whole rack of .22Mag and be glad you didn't get rid of it.

I guess I dont understand the mentality of having to have massive ammunition supplies on hand that a lot of people have on this forum. If I run out of ammo for something, I go shoot something else till I find more ammo. I don't worry myself over how many rounds I have in the safe and I certainly do not go sell a gun because I cant find any ammo for at this particular point in time. The sky is not falling and ammo will come back around again.

I sold all but one of my .22 WMR rifles a few years back when I started paying $13 per 50 rounds for the ammo I liked to use on prairie dogs. At .26 a round I could reload my .223 and .204 Ruger and extend my range by quite a bit for less money. I still have 400+ rounds for my .22 WMR and I'll still keep it as eventually I'll be able to get ammunition at a resonance price again.

IDK - "short term" seems to have lasted several years............. so far.

That said, I have several guns chambered in .22WRM, which makes me glad I long ago laid in an ample supply.

If I were down on ammo though, I'd look into purchasing in bulk before I'd consider selling the gun(s).

Bite the bullet, so to speak. ;)

The ammo shortage is a result of panic buying. Ammo manufacturers have been implementing plans to make more ammo, so within the next year or so I think you will find ammo becoming a lot more available and cheap. I'd hold off on selling it, .22 magnum is a great caliber and guns have horrible resale value right now.

@PetahW: You're absolutely right about the length of the shortage. If I recall correctly, it started here in arizona sometime in 2012. That's 2 years. Even if manufacturing production increases, I still think there will be shortages, because people will continue to hoard in case there is another future shortage. This may have created a market mindset. As you calculated in another thread, it doesn't take too many people to eat up excess production. Maybe things are starting to ease, though. .223 and 9mm seem to be getting plentiful and I can now find 12 gauge buckshot on the shelf.

@yotesmoker: As for selling the CZ, another forum member, "cheapshooter" has the tag line "Never sell or trade anything". Good advice. In my fifty years of buying and collecting guns, I've probably sold about 15. Without exception, I pretty much wish I had everyone of them back. The CZ is a quality rifle and who knows about its availability in the future. So, unless you need the money or absolutely hate the CZ, I would keep it.

Could sell it for a short term money gain. Buy another later at a higher price. Or perhaps gun case it out of sight out of mind buried back in the closet.

Every weapon I ever sold in the past. At the time of their selling always thought I no longer had a need for it. These days I remember every one of those I sold and now wish I hadn't. But it is your decision. You do what you think is appropriate for you.

Me? I'd hang onto it. I thinks about how long owners of 5mm RF went without ammo. Sure, a lot of folks sold, but when the ammo became available again, the ones who held onto theirs had some really nice rifles. the folks who sold and wanted to buy again- paid a heck of a lot more for those rifles.

I don't know why on Earth someone would hoard 22 WMR. But anyway, if you just don't shoot it much, sell it and get one in 22. I don't shoot my CZ x39 that much either but no way I'm selling it.

I'm not selling mine.
Patience!!As some production ramps up,I'm hoping those who buy to corner market and jack up the prices will find themselves sitting on a commodity that is crashing.

Took it out to my range yesterday.Had too much fun to get rid of it.Shot the flies on my target at 60 yards. If I have to I will pay the price when I run out of ammo but I hope it wont come to that.

What would you guys do?

I'd be patient.

Once the current ammo panic/hoarding/scalping craze dies down (it's taking too long, I realize) I'd then stock up on 22wmr and continue to enjoy a rifle I obviously like.

If you sell it now, you may have deep regrets later.

Is it a 452/3 or a 455?

I have a 455 Lux in .22lr and wound up getting the .17hmr and .22wmr barrel/magazine swap kits (American style are $129, Lux w. sights are $149 I think direct from CZ). Even though I have other dedicated guns for each caliber I think it's a neat option.

Just thinking maybe that would let you use the gun with different ammo for not much cost while not losing anything either by selling it (easier to let a barrel "sit around" while waiting for ammo compared to a full rifle).
