Dumb Rem 870 question..

DRKHORSE

Inactive
I don't like to ask dumb questions but sometimes I must.

I shot sporting clays with some buddies on Saturday and cleaned my 870 that evening.
After reassembling my gun, the slide will not "rack". The little button that you must push with your right index finger to release the pump is stuck in the "up" position. The button is just in front of the trigger guard. Did that make sense??

How can I get this button to release so I can rack the slide??

Thanks to everyone on the board! I've been lurking for awhile and learned quite a bit.

BTW, I shot a better score than some dude using a $1000 o/u with my 870. I love this gun!!

(Scratching my head).....

If the button is stuck in the up position it should be easy to rack the shotgun but impossible to lock the action closed.

When you cleaned it, did you remove the trigger group? If not, remove the bbl and action bars, check the bolt and carrier to see if they are correctly placed and reassemble.

If you did drop the trigger group, do so again, and make sure the button and the lever behind it can move unimpeded. These steps should fix the prob.

And the ONLY dumb questions are the ones people don't ask.

HTH....

Thanks, Dave. The button is definitely in the up position and the slide is definitely locked in the closed position.
I did not drop the trigger. I'll try that tonight, or maybe tomorrow, or tomorrow night.... :D

I always got a kick out of times when I would be shooting trap and be on a squad with guys shooting Perazzis and Kreighgoffs and I would break a better score with my Model 12.
Happy Shooting!! :)

OK, Darkhorse, let's see what happens.

One thing, IF YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY,POSITIVELY SURE IT'S NOT LOADED....

Dry fire it(In a safe place) and see if that unsticks it. I've hunch there's either a missassembly glitch or grunge impeding the movement of the unlocking lever.

Also, when you ressembled, did you "Click" the action bars in past BOTH shellcatchers? If it was working fine prior to dissassembly and not now, the prob is probably improper reassembly. Easy enough to do. Take apart, put together, check.

Also, just wait until you shoot a better score than the nice guy with the Ljutic that just advised you that an 870's OK to start with, but if you're going to be serious about trap you need a serious trap gun,heh,heh,heh....

Thanks again Dave. I tried to dry fire it and nothing happened (good or bad).

This guy had a Beretta I think. Like I said, I'm not that into shotguns (yet) so I'm no expert, but it was a beautiful gun. All the metal parts were engraved. He also had a leather shell bag, and was using different (handloaded) shells for each stand. It was pretty funny. He would get upset and throw his empty shells when he missed!!!
