statist adj. and n.

STATIST \Sta"tist\, n. [From State.] 1. A statesman; a politician; one skilled in government. [Obs.]

Statists indeed, And lovers of their country. --Milton.

2. A statistician. --Fawcett.

This is what a cut and paste of statist produced. Personally I find it interesting. A statist, by definition, appears to be a simple statesman. The practice however, again by definition, appears to by diametrically opposed to a system of checks and balances. I'll leave it to others more skilled than myself to define the term in context and by way of example..

The use of terms, vs. the dictionary definition, can be confusing. Not a dumb question.

Basically, the term "statist" has come to mean one who believes in the desirability of a very strong central government. Further, the CG somehow has a "right" to your money as taxes, for unlimited numbers of programs to do good.

It also includes the belief that governmental folks do indeed know what's best for you, for your family, and for the country. THEY are the EXPERTS!

Most of them are naive as all get-out, of course. When they squall, "There oughta be a law!", they don't realize that police power is police power, eventually enforced by a gun. Desn't matter if it's BATF or EPA; FBI or USDA.

You'll note that this usage tends to include all "Liberals" and the Klintonista Gang.

Hope this helps, Art

As a school of philosophy statism posits that the state is the unit of reality and the standard of value.
A statist is a supporter of statism.

They're the bad guys.

ernest2 - If you're interested in reading more about what has already been mentioned, I recommend "Freedom in Chains" by James Bovard.

My definition of a statist is "lazy liberal coward."
