dumb barrel question

Hello folks,

Is it possible to turn down the threades on a barrel intended for a large ring action to accomidate fitting to a small ring action? I know that the large ring action ID is 1.1 inches and the small ring is .98. Both are threaded to 12 TPI. It seems reasonable given the .03 difference between the two action types. If it this is doable, is there anything that may need to the barrrels torque shoulder?

Thanks.

Did just that about 20 years ago. A frien had left his 30-06 stored uncleaned about 7 years and not only was the barrel shot, but dry-wood termites had taken up residence in the stock! At the time I had mostly a lot of patience and a hatful of ignorance and I ordered a new barrel and stock somewhere( Sherwood dist., I think. When it arrived, Lo and behold, the theads were too big! Cranked it down and retheaded it in the company lathe; made a fitted shim spacer for the proper(tight) headspace, re-stocked (tung-oil finished) and it came out better than I had any right to expect! Yes, it CAN be done!

Joe, yes it's done all the time. By the time you get it down to .980" the old threads should be barely visible. You won't have to worry about "picking them up", just rethread. Maybe it's early Joe but what do you mean by .03 difference? George

Thanks for the reply guys. George, the .03 difference is just another example of public school education... :) I meant the ID of the receiver where the barrel threads in, this actually being .12"

The guy that runs the gun store with the FFL is named Randy Ketchum. He
is closed on monday.

HE charges me $20 to do that. I got a bunch of Turkish Mausers for $54 before I found out that Czeck VZ24s for $76 are a better deal.

ANyway, the Turks have small ring threads. One barrel from Midway, could not be reworked as it has a sleeve on it to make it bigger. The thing would just fall appart if you tried to turn it into a small ring thread.
