Duffle Bag Gun?

Does it make sense to carry a gun in a duffle bag with some other stuff, or will there be too much damage to the shotgun?

I don't like tactical looking dedicatd weapon bags as I live in the apts and people see me walk to and fro the car. Are there any legal issues as I am in CA?

Duffle bag with room alloted for muzzle and butt protection isn't going to harm the gun.

Sumpin else to think about tho...
Do you have a duffle bag long enough ?
Remember, minimum barrel length is 18".
Even a break action shotgun is going to be around 34" long.
Bolts, semis and shuckers are going to be even longer.

I'd suggest you use a standard carry case and just slip into a duffel bag that fits. This way you'll have the covert carry with the necessary protection and pockets.

I've a coupla take-down beater-types. I'll use one of those "gun socks"-things, slip the barrel into the front, fold over & give it a 1/2 twist, then frop the butt portion into the end.

Gives a 1/2 sized profile while still protected - cheap enough too.
One of those mini-bungi cords makes a dandy wrap around the butt to hold the whole thing together.

Seabag. Like a sailor uses. Put your SG in it's case in the bag with whatever else you need, throw it over your shoulder and you're off to sea/ shoot/ nobody knows. Seabags are cheap too.

Assuming you have ruled out putting it in your banjo case you have a couple of options.

Go to your local mega sporting goods store. I have a friend who plays softball, his bag came with extension sewn into the ends for inserting bats into his bag along with clothes, glove, and misc. other gear. Should be long enough for a shotgun. There are other sports that have similar bags. Spend some time looking in the different parts of the store until you find something that will meet your needs.

I've got it! A golf bag, with those fuzzy head-covers protecting the barrell! :D :D

WaltherP99man, you have opened up a whole new horizon of accessorizing to me! Thanks! :p

hlmcfa ... I think you're onto something! $$$

(Although it might be hard to explain to the CHIP who just pulled you over for speeding.)

I've used a L.L. Bean backpack before, (no frame type), pretty good protection. Lots of extra pockets for "goodies" too. (Also can hang in closet on hook when not being used. Sort of a "Grab and Run" setup ... ammo, flashlight, knife, car keys, etc. )

Ha! I like the golf bag with the fuzzy head covers! Overheard at the sporting clays course-" Caddy, let's try the 24" barrelled 686 bored skeet and skeet for this one. No, it's the one with the green cover and the white fuzzy ball."

Cabelas already sells what you are looking for

Its a guncase with a "Duffle bag" cover. Not cheap but looks to be a quality alum guncase.

I use my old lacrosse gear bag. Minimum length on lacrosse sticks is very close to minimum length for long arms.
Also, folding stocks help somewhat.

Fuzzy head cover over the stock. Get an oversized one if required - that way you grab the happy end when removing it.

Depending on where you live, and what your demographics are, maybe a snowboard bag would be "tactical camoulflage".

I too have used, and still use at times, the large softball bag. The bottom is a zip-around compartment that holds my cheap hard case with two shotguns or rifles (mine all have 18" to 20" barrels). I then carry some targets, a cleaning kit, shooting pad and some ammo in the top part of the bag and usually a pistol in a side pocket. The bag or pretty good quality was only about $25 at K-Mart. And, it has Spaulding in large letters written on the side of it!
