Dual-purpose duty gun?

It's time to make the move from carrying this full size Glock 17, to something that will work for me on duty uniformed, on duty plain clothes and off duty. I am looking for something mid-size, with 10+ round capacity, double action only or DA w/ decocker and it has to be 9mm. I have about $475 to spend. I have been a fan of Glocks for years, but just don't like the big hump back grip. I have never been able to shoot as well (meaning qualification scores) with my G17 as I can with my 1911. I shot a Sig P225 and had incredible groupings and a perfect score. So anyway, time to make a change. Here are my thoughts thus far: Steyr M9, Walther P99, or go nuts and buy a used G19 and have a grip reduction done to it. Or should I run away from polymer and go with a CZ 75 PCR, Sig P228/9 or ? Do you know any LEO's who carry the Steyr M9 or Walther P99? Thanks for your advice (in advance).

How about the Glock 19? I've seen those in duty holsters and they're not too large to be carried concealed fairly easily. Just a thought, since you're already familiar with the manual of arms for that gun and the mags would work also.

MLK18,

I have been carrying the Glock-19 down here in
Texas for the last 4 years for just the reasons
you've mentioned. I think it's the best option
out there though I sometimes find myself missing
the full grip - especially in the winter with
gloves (that may be a concern in your part of
the country!). I have tried all the options
that you mentioned with the exception of the
Steyr (which I've only handled). The P99 is a
good choice but I find it noticibly larger than
the G19. The Sig 228 compares closely but is
just a bit taller. In light of your experience
with the 225 - this might be your best option.
The 229 is just a bit too heavy for constant
concealed carry and the same can probably be
said of the CZ75 clan of firearms. The Steyr
seems like it might work well (enough grip to
use with gloves but short enough to be concealable. From what you've said - I'd go with
the Sig 228.

My thoughts only,

I've heard that the Walther's have problems with +P 9mm ammo. This would definitely take it out of the running for me. I have looked at the Wlather for my wife, since the grip on my Glocks are a little to large for her, and it fit very well in her hand. I have never shot one, but I would love to just to see if the +P thing is true.

I would say to go with the CZ. CZs are great quality guns, very accurate, very durable, very reliable and the price is incredible (you get similar quality as a SIG for about 50% less). The CZ 75 PCR has an alloy frame and is almost 5 ounces lighter than the standard compact model. I just handled one today in the gun shop and it felt better than my full sized CZ 75- probably my next gun.

As a second choice I'd agree with the others about the Glock 19. You are used to Glock, you know the quality, there is less for you to relearn and it is a little smaller than your 17.

I am not a cop and I don't live in a CCW state so these are not based upon experience. I don't really talk to my police friends about what they carry (most just carry what is issued- those people who I know who went into police work are generally NOT gun people).

I chose the CZ-75 PCR over a Sig 225 and they were the same price as the Sig was being discontinued. Both were around $400. I have no regrets. The CZ fit my had better and I like the position of the decocker. The sights are good and the gun is accurate and has a mild felt recoil for its light weight.
