Dual Dovetail Mounts ???

I've decided on the Leupold dual dovetail mounts for my scope. It's a Tasco World Class 3-9x40 and it's going on a Remington 700 ADL in .308 (short action). I like the mounts because of their strength, their look, and because of the Leupold torx screws, which don't strip out and which tighten down nicely.

My questions are:

1. Which height should I get? I checked on the Leupold website, and their recommendation is to use as low a mount as possible. Is this good advice? Will the low rings work for the setup I describe? The salespeople at Bass Pro Shop, where I looked at these rings, all recommended the medium height.

2. Is it typical to have to take off the rear open sight to mount a 40 mm scope? I think I could probably leave the sight on with the medium ring height, but it would definitely have to come off with the low rings.

3. If I do take off the rear sight, are there screw plugs that I can buy to plug the threaded holes in the barrel? (just to protect them for any possible future use).

Any thoughts here would be appreciated.

I tried low once, almost didn't work.

I had a rem 700 VS and put the Dual Dove tail lows with a Springfield Armory 6x40. It had just about the perfect amount of space between the scope and the barrel. Problem was, the back of the scope would occasionally hit the bold handle as I rechambered a round. It was too close in the rear! I just bought my dad some dual dovetail mounts and medium rings for a 40mm Leupold he has. They are a tad bit high, but the bolt clears fine. I would suggest the medium, as it will give you plenty of bolt space and space from your barrel. You can try low, but be ready for the risk that you might have to buy some mediums right after. Good luck.

I'd also go with the Medium. I second what was said about the bolt-handle clearing the scope. With the Remington, this can be a problem. As for the rear site, I'd actually take both of them off if you have to remove the rear one. Otherwise, the front one is essentially useless. (If the screw is under the blade, disregard. It's much too hard to remove).

Although my picture shows Millet Rings, I'd really suggest you get Burris Signature. They grip the scope much tighter and won't marr it. The reason I used Millet Rings was so that I could top them off with scope-sights. Never did.

Anyhow, here's my baby. Savage Model 10 (short action) rebarreled with a 20" light contour barrel chambered for .358 Winchester. Entire package parkerized.

FOr what it is worth, on my Remington 700LTR with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9X40 Tactical, I used medium. Low would have worked, but that was too dependent on barrel profile and thickness of a 40mm objective bell. I never had a bolt handle problem on any modern rifle.

GUYON, if you hadn't mentioned leaving or removing te rear sight I might not have suggested this but have you looked at the Qwik Release system? They work as well as Leupold says! Or better. Just a thought. As for ring height, hope your dealing in a good shop where the owner will let ya try different ones. Even the best of the best set-ups may need to be lapped. I believe that most scope repairs could be avoided if the scope tube wasn't torqued or bent when mounted. beertrucker-x

Usually the same screw plugs you pull from the top of the reciever where your scope mounts go will fit into the holes where the open sights are. At least the 4 mod. 700's I've had were like that. No need to buy new ones. I always took off both open sights, just my preference.

I'd suggest going low as possible with the rings, this will insure a good cheek to stock weld and improve your shooting. Since your scope has a 40mm objective the low Leupold rings should allow the bell of the scope to clear a standard weight barrel by 1/8" to 1/4". Again, just my preference.

FWIW, I *just* changed rings on my 700 BDL long action to Leupold Lows (front dovetail only) from leupold highs, and I use a Vari-X II in 3x9. About 1/8-3/16" clearance at the barrel, and no bolt contact. You'd probably hit both at the same time with that scope. My dad got the highs when he bought a mountain rifle (same scope) and obviously the sales folks weren't too scrupulous in their ring choice for him. We've since switched scopes (he's got the 2-7 compact leupold now), and I just now bought the low rings. Boy, lots of good info available on this sight, eh?

Thanks for the advice. Well, I did try the lows first but found that my bolt did contact the scope. It could slide by without hitting, but I had to be very careful. I didn't want to have to baby it every time I worked the action, and I'm sure that given time, my scope would have had a nice worn and shiny spot. So I went to the mediums. They work just fine with about 3/16 clearance on the bolt.

As far as screw plugs, muleshoe, I saw this about the receiver screws on the Remington website. However, when I try mine, they won't fully seat. In fact, I tried to seat one tonight, and thinking that perhaps there was just a burr on the threads, I turned too hard. The top of the screw snapped off, and I spent the next hour painstakingly drilling out the rest of the screw. The threads in the barrel appear undamaged since the rear sight screws still tighten down just fine.

Either I'm going to have to try the plugs from Brownells, or I'm going to have the holes carefully retapped.
