Dual citizenship

There are several thousand votes coming out of Israel, who are citizens of Israel.

I don't like it! Your Heart can't serve two countries. I would feel this way no matter what the country.

What can be done?

I don't know. I have also previously read that Mexico is allowing dual citizenship, so that newly naturalized Mexican immigrants can vote in both US elections and elections in Mexico.

Isn't it funny how we never hear of things like this from the major media outlets.

I think Diane Feinstein is a dual citizen. It doesn't stop her.

BTW, any views on if her dual citizenship, if it exists, affects her eligibility to be a U.S. Senator?

Actually the US govt. used to claim to be critical of dual citizenship, but they've changed their mind since they want access to expats money. From what I've heard renouncing your citizenship is quite difficult, and the IRS takes the preposterous position that it has the authority to tax your income for 10 years after you renounce citizenship!

Switzerland allows dual citizenship. On one condition: You may only
vote in Switzerland. And you also get drafted if you're male.

If you decide to move back to your home country for more than 5 years,
you usually lose your citizenship.

I have slight problems with Israelis voting - heck, either they are
American, or they forget about it. As said earlier, you can't have
your heart in two places.

EricM,

You are completely and totally wrong. Actually the US does not allow you to receive American citizenship unless you renounce all other foreign citizenship.

HOWEVER, once you have US citizenship, however it was acquired, it is very difficult to get rid of and acquiring or being granted foreign citizenship does not, according to the State department, even suggest you wish to renounce US citizenship. Renouncing your citizenship requires a formal statement at a US embassy. Even then, if the IRS believes you are renouncing citizenship in order to avoid our punitive tax system, they will claim the authority to tax you as if you are a US citizen.

In the past it was suggested that serving in foreign military forces was evidence you intended to renounce US citizenship, but today this is not considered the case. Witness the many US/Israeli citizens who serve in the Israeli military.

I personally know many dual citizens, and they have all the legal rights and official documents that you or I have.

I have dual citizenship. Texas and US, although I am considering dropping one depending upon the final outcome of the US election. ;) Bush will top dog where I reside.

RKBA!
