DSA SG58 carbine vs. Robinson Arms M96 Carb

I'm looking to upgrade my rifle collection and am torn between these two. On the one hand the DSA looks very well made, sturdy, cheap mags, muzzle brake but I don't like the grip angle and the trigger feels like crap( found a used one that had a very nice trigger)plus I would have to get set up with a new reloading setup for .308.

The M96 feels very nice in hand, good grip angle, have mags for these already, dies and loads all ready, good 2 stage trigger, easy to disassemble, adjustable gas porting but is stamped receiver/welded in spots, specific sight rail is $219, also has muzzle brake in 223. So given intended use for 3 gun matches and DCM/CMP(supposed to be Stoner 63 clone???) what would be your choice???

Be frank and honest, I'd appreciate that. Thanks for anything you can share...

Sounds like you want the M96 more. STG58 has alot more parts and upgrades available, so I'd probably go with the STG58.

In my opinion these are both the tops of their respective breeds. It all depends if you want to shoot big bullets or little bullets. Personally I don't know which I would get, it would depend on how I was feeling that day. :)

Or...

You could go to your local FAL smithy specialist and have him (or her...) build one up for you. I went to the DSArms web page and was shocked by the increase in prices... $1600 for a standard rifle? Phooey. Too bad they are so good.

I have an Argie FAL imported by DSArms. The trigger was stiff. I took it to http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com (or something like that) and had him stone it and take out the stiff trigger spring and but in a Belgian spring. I have a pretty dang good trigger now. Cost me $35. You price may vary.

You could also get a the parts yourself and put it together (you may need the help of a smith). Lots cheaper. Get the headspace right and your FAL will shoot well.

For your Americanized competition needs it sounds like you might want a different rifle, however.

Neither can be used for DCM/CMP service rifle competition. For service rifle competition, you must use either an M1 Garand, M1A, or AR15. For match rifle competition, you have much more freedom to choose, but whatever you choose cannot have a recoil brake. Most folks in match rifle competitions use bolt guns, though I've seen some AR15 space guns in match rifle. Even if you removed the recoil brake, you'd be at a serious disadvantage using either the M96 or STG58 in match rifle competition.

Well, for 3-gun you'd probably want to use .223.

That's a tough choice. Try flipping a coin a few times; either way you'll have a nice rifle.

My FAL is by far the most accurate rifle I've ever owned despite my noticeably poor marksmenship. I bought the basic gun from a local gun shop. Not quite a junker but close. Then I took it to Arizona Expert Arms (they have a web site) and had them completely redo it. Well worth the money. Excellent work!

One of these days I'm going to also buy the Robinson.

The other gun I'd consider is the AK style rifles that Robinson is building up. I just ordered one.

This is a tough choice. The STG-58 and the M96 are about tops in their respective catagories (7.62mm NATO vs. 5.56mm NATO combat rifles.)

You may just have to get one of each. If it were me, I'd get the M96 (I've already got an STG-58.)

M96 vs. DSA SG58

Thank you for you many suggestions and for acknowleging my frustrations. Yes I would rather have both but am of limited resources for the time being. I have been leaning towards the DSA but I will still have to weigh things out...Thanks again guys. BTW, I thought I'd pass along that DSA is finalizing a match trigger for their SA58 for next year that is a drop in...It is supposed to break at 3.5lbs...

Just my .02 on the subject:

.223 caliber weapons:

AR-15, they are cheap (NEW ONES) parts, mags and ammo AVAILABLE ALL OVER THE PLACE

M96, Where are the parts??

.308W caliber weapons:

DSA STG-58: Why, when you can get a functioning one (FAL) from some of the wholesalers going for about $525.00 (dealer price).

OK, if you don't trust the wholesalers because of some of the negative stories, then buy one from one of the gunsmiths that you trust. Or a used one that you know functions.

If you wanna spend $$$, go right ahead and buy the DSA.

FALs are nice rifles, but if you're thinking MATCH then buy an M1A.
