Dryfiring Mini-14

Is it safe to the firing pin to dryfire the Mini-14 without a snapcap?

I have a .223 snapcap, but it's a pain in the back to have to recycle it manually everytime!

Thanks.

Well, I take it the it is okay.

Has anyone spoke to Ruger service rep about it?

I'd do it on Monday unless someone has heard already on the matter.

I'd like an answer from somebody who has broken a firing pin by dry firing it?

I have, but only on the CZ-52 pistol which has quite the history of just that.

There is a myth out there that dry firing is bad. It comes mostly from rimfires where it is, indeed, bad to do. The Mini-14 is so tough, I think you could dry fire it constantly for a year and not break the thing. If you do, just buy a new one. They're cheap.

I use snap caps with mine after I broke my firing pin. Ruger will not send a replacement you have to ship the gun back to them to have it installed.

How much firing and dryfiring did it take to break the pin?

I notice that almost all manuals say not to dry fire but I suspect they do that as CYA for ND's.

Removal and reinstallation of the firing pin on a Mini-14 is a job for a competent gunsmith. I do, however, wonder how the firing pin broke?
