dry fire 1911?????

some of my friends use to dry fire their 1911 using cigarette butts or rubber in the impact point (firing pin stop)...their reason is that the hammer will not destroy the firing pin stop & firing pin due to excessive dry firing.
Is this practice good or bad?
Thanks a lot!

If the firing pin spring is really weak the firing pin could slam inside the hole/tunnel it sits in & could get damaged.
So keep the gun in good condition & unlike that guys H&K, dry fire 'till you can't cock the hammer back because of a blistered thumb ! ;)

A good snap cap is never a bad idea, but the 1911 will stand up to dry firing indefinitely without one.

BTW, for snap caps, I recommend a nylon block in the primer pocket of an empty case. It cushions the firing pin better than any rubber and most other plastics.

Most 1911's (I'd say all, but I haven't tried them all) will handle dry-firing basically forever. Mine have been dry-fired thousands of times, and I see no evidence of any problems when I detail strip the slide.
