Dry and sober as a judge

Very discouraging to read about the four people gunned down in Perris Califoria bar over a bar stool. I have been "dry" going on sixteen years and am a gun-owner. What would "dry" mean for you?

Well, based on the definitions of a well known 12-step program, there's a differnce between "dry" and "sober." Without going into a lot of detail, I consider myself sober for quite some time now...

In light of the number of judges I've heard about who are chronic DUI offenders, the phrase "sober as a judge" has lost its original meaning for me.

For me, "dry" would mean "characterized by an absence of moisture".

Err... wouldn't that be when your slide locks back ? ;)
Or as in dry as...
"I really NEED a drink !
But won't/can't have one. :)

KILI MAN:
I try not to get "Dry."
However...I have been "Sober" for a long time. The last drink of alcohol that I had was 16 May 1973.
We won't talk about how much Scotch I consumed on a daily basis prior to that. :)
"One day at a time" :)

Thanks guys, it's good to know that there are some of you out there. Life is no rose garden all the time, good to have friends and the creator to fall back on when times get tough. Jogging, going to the range helps me keep focused and able to handle situations and keep things under control. I try to hand some of this off to my children. Thanks.

Whoa, DorGunR....1973....that's a heck of a lot of twenty-four hours.

We don't get use the word "sober" all that often where I hang out, but I've been clean going on eight years -- and that's regardless of whether or not I have my bath that day. :)

Good to see y'all here.

Last time I had a beer was Sept. of 1986,
14 years ago. I'm far from dry , though!
I got me one of them Norinco 70 round drums,
full up.

My friend, Stanly, was told in 1994
that he had to stop drinking or he would
incur irreversable liver damage so we put him
on a unigue approach to recovery which was
most sucessfull.

Every time he felt an urge to go to the watering hole, instead, he went to the gun shop and blew his entire wallet on the new toy of his choice.

This had three effects:

First, It kept him broke and unable to buy booze.
Second,
when he really needed money for an emergency,
he had an awesome gun collection to sell to raise some cash.

Third, it kept him sober & dry and and saved
his life, or at least, his liver. (same difference).

Its been 6 years now and he has more guns in
his collection that I do in my gun shop inventory!

Oh yea, and his health is great, he even got a job driving tractor trailer trucks and his
employers do blood tests on their drivers
so I know he no longer drinks.

For ten years , Stanley was a famous drunk,
but he did a complete turn around; kinda unbelievable , but true! And 6 years more
sober than most judges.

I haven't had a drop of alcohol since January of '98. :) I had just a little too much of a buzz goin' when I installed a whole new ignition system in my 'cuda.
FRIED it, then bought another and installed it while drinkin' straight rootbeer. It's been workin' fine ever since, and I just haven't had the urge to drink anything since.
Havin' the extra money to spend on my toys is also nice. ;)
