Drilling and tapping a Savage 99

I have a savage 99EG from 1952. It's not exactly the rarest gun out there, probably one of the more common 99s. Everything is origional except for a crack in the stock that was repaired and is not noticable. Finish is good but blueing is worn from handleing. Since this gun is not exactly a collecters piece would I be shooting myself in the foot to get it tapped for scope bases? For some reason my eyes think I'm getting old and refuse to focus on the rear sight, front sight, and target all at the same time. If I leave it as is I probably won't be able to shoot it much, at least not over 50 yards. Plus I traded for a leupold vxII that is just sitting around with nothing to do. I'd like to pair them up, would you?

[It's not exactly the rarest gun out there, probably one of the more common 99s.[ - Agreed.

[this gun is not exactly a collecters piece] - No, it's not.

[would I be shooting myself in the foot to get it tapped for scope bases?[ - No, IMHO.

[I'd like to pair them up, would you?] - Yup.

Good way to go. What is the caliber? The 99 has low-angle ejection, so the brass will not hit the scope, I believe. I had a 99 in 300 Savage 40+ yrs ago that I regret trading off. It wore a 2 3/4 x Redfield that worked well.

What would be a good estimate on the value of this rifle chambered in 243 win. I have a chance to pick one up for $300. Just not sure.

Sir;
I really like the 99! I'm sure Weaver has the right bases and be careful drilling and tapping - it could be hard! You might also check Redfield or Leupold for a one piece base - I also think Williams makes a one piece too.

Be sure to get them on straight!

You may want to look at the selling prices on Gunbroker for 99eg's. Nice original un-drilled rifles can bring close to 1k, drilled and tapped 500. They may not be as collectible as some but the are collectible.

I doubt that 99EG's with cracked stocks and worn bluing are bringing a grand, although I admit prices have gone crazy lately.

But I do advise having a gunsmith do the drill and tap that rifle. IMHO, D&T is never a DIY job and the 99 is not an action to learn on.
