Dreaming wistfully for a .22 MAG revolver...

Since "I R" the 22luvr, I should have a fine .22mag revolver in my meager collection. I don't so......Here's what I want:

* all stainless steel construction
* 7-9 round capacity
* barrel length in the area of 4-6"
* Adjustable sights
* something accurate enough to go target shooting or varmint hunting.
* Something durable enought to put thousands of rounds through
* something basic, light, and simple enough that a child might learn the fine art of shooting from their grandpa

I really like that .22 mag round; deceptively powerful and effective. Anyone chrono this round out of a 4-6" tube?

I know you'll come through......it doesn't have to be new but I want something QUALITY that I can hand down to the next generation.

Thanks for letting me share

This link deals with 6" and longer barrels with some mention of a short automag. It is not exactly what you want but might be interesting. I find the wmr to provide better velocity and less shot to shot variaition with the longer barrels but the new federal JHP and WW Supreme show real promise in the shorter barrels.

It sounds like what you chiefly need is a 6.5" stainless Ruger SS convertible. These things are built like hockey pucks and are often very accurate.

`I currently have 2! Both are Taurus (:eek: :rolleyes: ) 941's. Actually, one is the 2" UL version, and to be honest I've not been real happy with that one. HEAVY DA trigger, that I tried to fix with a Wolf spring - then mis-fires! Then the timing went, so it went back to the factory, twice actually. It will be used as a "trainer" for new shooters as they step up from .22LR, but nothing more.

The second is a 4" SS with full underlug barrel, and it is just a dream to shoot! The DA trigger pull is still heavy, but no where near the 2" UL's! But it's twice as accurate as the UL. It WILL be my woods/trail companion during summer hikes as it's slim enough to easily conceal and light enough to not be a bother. Nice balance, easy to teach with. In fact, I'll be teaching with it this weekend! Both were right at $315 out the door.

Good luck with your decision.

another vote for the Ruger Single Six convertible

you only get 6 shots but mine is oh so accurate.

I had a Ruger Single Six convertible about 20 years ago, and loved it. I still kick myself for getting rid of it! I've got a Mark II Target, but I still miss the revolver. I used to go to the range three times a week and put about a hundred rounds of LR and at least 50 rounds of Mags through that thing every time. Sweetest shooting .22 out there in my opinion, but then I'm prejudiced and really like Ruger products.

I have an old H&R converitable .22lr/.22Mag.
Avoid the H&R's.
Go for a Ruger convertible.

Built dump truck tough.

(Part of me says you might be disappointed with a .22mag. unless you've shot one. They're expensive and loud compared to the .22lr. A convertible will let you shoot the lr)

S&W used to make the 650, a stainless 3" roundbutt on a J frame, some of them came with a spare .22LR cylinder. Might try the gunshow this weekend at the North Atlanta Trade Center. 85N to Indian Trail, R on Oak (across from QT gas), then right were you see the signs. This is probably the best show for our area. I hope that SW brings out a similar gun only in Titanium!!! Now that would be sweet. Take it easy.

PKS, ya gotta pic? I bet that is super sweet. I am hoping, S&W brings out a Ti centennial/Bodyguard and offer it with spare cylinder, like 9 or better still 10 rounds. I would be all over that. I have come close to buying the little Tauri 94 ultralite in .22WMR. Ti is ideal for this caliber. They could stand to do something half way innovative to help get their feet planted firmly on Earth, after that last stunt!! Good shootin':cool:

I just picked up a S&W 648 yesterday, paid $375. It is a 22mag stainless 6" full underlug barrel K frame. 6 shots, adjustable sights and apprears to be in great shape. I would post pics if I could find a host. I had been looking for a stainless S&W for a long time, went to the gun shop yesterday and there she was! Best of luck in your search.

Sounds like you're describing my 4" Taurus Stainless 941. I've had it for 5 or 6 years and it's my most used gun. I carry it loaded with four shot loads and four hollow points when working around the property. The double action pull is heavy but the single action trigger pull is light and smooth and the accuracy is fine. I replaced the original wood gips with the newer Taurus finger groove rubber gripsand it's even easier to shoot.

The Ruger Single-Six fits your bill! Looks and shoots great - and - it's built! (It is a Ruger, after all)

Why look any further? :)

Look for a S&W 651, the discontinued stainless J-frame "Kit Gun Magnum". Similar to the far more common .22 LR Model 63. About everything you wanted except it's a 6 shot. Excellent quality, plenty accurate, and 1/2 the weight of Dave's 648 (which is actually a few ounces heavier than a .44 Mag N-frame with the same length barrel. The Smith 617/648 were some of the heaviest revolvers they ever made - probably not the best choice for a child to learn on).

Does Smith make a .22 Mag version of their new 317? If they did that would fit the bill provided it was offered with a barrel longer than 3 1/2". -- Kernel
