Dreaming about the next rifle....

I would like some thing unique.

But I am a lefty (can't see out of my right eye).

Options for a big bore left hand friendly

Ruger No. 1
CZ 550 left handed 375H&H, thinking 458 Lott but that is more limiting in function for anything I would do.

I really like the CZ but here is the catch.
$1,659! http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/62360-55.html

Why is it $700 more than the right handed? Fancier wood (better...)? Is it possible to get the non-american stock (I dont much care for using scopes)?

Being a lefty isn't nearly as limiting as many like to think. I have shot lefty my whole life. I qualified expert as a lefty infantryman on a M249 & an M16A2. I kill a few dozen doves, two or three rabbits, and a couple of deer every year left handed, shooting right handed rifles and shotguns.

Buy whatever you want. Shoot it and enjoy it. The Winchester M70 Featherweight is only made as a righty, but that wouldn't deter me from getting one if it was truly what I wanted.

But, if you want a Ruger #1, a Medium Sporter in 45-70 would be pretty useful on all sorts of game. Another cool rifle is the Shiloh 1874:

I would get a right handed rifle if it was a bench rest rifle, but this would be used in field positions.

Then with going to the 45-70 there is the Marlin 1895GBL.

I like the 45-70 but I have no depth perception for its trajectory and I was just thinking of something a little more different.

The 375H&H does everything the 45-70 does but with less bullet drop out to 300 yards (absolute max of me using the rifle is 400 yards I think).

And if I was going the No. 1 rout I would go with the biggest because they are the same price, that is how I arrived at the 375 H&H.

Well, I personally don't have a use for such a powerful chambering, and if I did, I'd need a repeater instead of a single shot. If I'm hunting something that large, I want a fast follow up shot. But I do like the looks of the Ruger #1. Luckily, it comes in several calibers. I recently spotted a 30-30 version on Gun Broker.

The Marlin 1895, for me, would have to be made pre-2010. After that and its a roll of the dice as far as quality control is concerned.

Good luck in your search. :)

I think the Ruger No. 1 looks very nice but from what I read accuracy is hit and miss (pun intended).

I just dont think inaccurate rifles are worth the time.

The CZ is the more surefire route.

But now that the CZ costs so much a sharps is not much further away (45-70 smokeless). Think I created more problems then solved with this thread lol.

southpaw is as southpaw does

I shoot rifles southpaw because of extreme left eye dominance. I was born right handed and have trained myself ambidextrous. Today I worked mostly left handed as I sliced my right thumb open Sunday. I was locksmithing today one of my bags of tricks.

I strongly encourage lefties to buy left handed rifles or truly ambidextrous ones. It's much safer when the rifle vents gas or blows up to shoot the correct handed rifle.

For a budget rifle buy a used Rem 700 LH I pick em up for under $400. If you want a new rifle and don't mind the poor access to the chamber a Tika T3 is good. I have no doubt the Savages many rave about here are good but lack the personal experience to varify.
