Dragunov or Vepr (or something else).

I've had my eye on these two for a little while now. The Vepr is less expensive, but I like the lines of the Dragunov (Romak version is all I've found...sigh). Willing to go about $850 on the Dragunov. Given that the Dragunov is a 'sniper rifle', which would you consider to be better for a leisurely day of shooting. Looking for anything on quality and reliability. Also, if there are any other battle/sniper rifle recommendations in this price range, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Haven't shot either. Handled both, thought the Vepr seemed nicer somehow. I'll second DZ; .308 could be a bonus given ammo availibility.

Having only handled an AK variant before, what should I be looking for performance wise if I elect to get the Vepr in .308? Are there any parts or reliability issues for the Vepr?
Thanks again!

after shooting the vepr i can say that it is hard to tell you are shooting .308 and considering i was just trying to get a "zero" off the open sightd it does fairly well.
the only thing i see different on the super vepr is that the front sight assy has been removed, and an ak scope mount that utilizes a weaver base is used instead of the mount the vepr comes with.
might try that with mine.mmmmmm.....
as for it being only a 10rd mag unit. there are smiths doing galil mag change overs. but imho for the cost of the mags + the labor to convert the mag well, i can buy a few more vepr mags @ a whooping $30ea.
but thats why i also own fn's etc...

I have no experience with the Vepr but I recently bought a Romak 3 from Classic Arms www.classicarms.org and have spent two days on the range with it. I am happy with my new rifle BUT this is not an easy rifle to shoot well. Eye relief on the scope is critical and I continually get bumped, not hit just bumped, on the glasses by the scope during recoil. The length of pull on the stock is extremely short, and it is impossible for me to get any kind of proper cheek weld on it. It would require someone with a much fuller face than mine. The trigger pull is typical AK (this is not a true Dragunov of course) and is long and rough but that can be cured.
However, the rifle functions very well, ammo is presently plentiful and cheap and I believe it has a potential for impressive accuracy once I get more practice with it.
I am glad I bought it.

Hi, folks. I'm also trying to decide between the Romanian Romak Druganov and the Super VEPR. I'm interested in using it for range practice at 200-300 yards. Which one would be more accurate at those ranges? The 7.62X54 or .308?

The super Vepr is now available...it's dealer cost is about $699. If I were you I'd go for the .308 instead of the 7.62x54. The Super Vepr is a really nice rifle.

Whats the difference between the Vepyr in .308 and the Saiga in .308 ? AIM surplus has $400 Saigas with illuminated reticle scopes thrown in. Looks like a deal.
