Down-sizing from 44 to 38 snub

Haven't been out to the range, yet, but my model 38 feels and fits my hand so much better since I've swapped out the original standard wood grips for a rubber overmolded "combat" style grip (CTC LG305).

I can't wait to get out and give it a spin.

Different strokes for different folks!!! I dislike the feel of rubber grips. They have never added anything to my hand. Some folks think they absorb recoil better, and maybe they do.

My preferrence is a large smooth wood grip with an open backstrap. The Ruger GP-100 has Eagle Classic Smooth Woods, and the SW 686 has Eagle Heritage Smooth Woods. They are great quality, less expensive (almost) than Hogue, and may fill your hand better...;)

The best hand-filling grip I've found for a j-frame is the Pachmayr compac. Makes a little gun decidedly less concealable, but also considerably more shootable.

Hogue monogrip #60000 which encloses backstrap..

... if you can draw your Smith from whereever you carry it with a bigger grip and... a big hand.

I have a Smith 442 and 340 SC, several Taurus 85 and 731, and have tried just about every grip and pocket holster combo. The absolute best grip for the J frame I found by accident at a range in Jacksonville.. and I happened to recall the model number.... 60000 Hogue monogrip. Covers the backstrap with soft rubber... good depth... like an inche and a half... and finger grooves for 3 fingers. One small problem: I could not get it and my medium sized fingers ( 4 5/8 inch tennis racquet) hand out of my pocket in a timely fashion. Also, the third finger part of the grip sticks out of my pocket. I have compromised with th butler creek boot grip that has decent fnger grooves.. reasonably soft rubber.. which can be drawn easily.

I found the Hogue compact grips too fat to get my hand around in the pocket.. but worked great "at the range." Too bad we can't get bad guys to come after us "at the range."

Good luck, and experiment. Grips are cheap.

PS. I did every pocket holster short of the $45 leather and found Rober MIka's pocket to be the best at only $16! He uses naughahyde for sweat prevention... and has a stiffener which holds the holster open... vastly improving draw times.. and reholstering.. the minor issue. (The holdopen feature keeps the pant material from catching your gun on the way out.) I cannot say enough good about this. Uncle mikes.. doesn't hold the gun in position... etc. Nemesis.. too "tall" for a J frame.. doesn't release well.. etc. etc. etc. Mika's website:

PPS HIs standard pocket was quite good. I had a custom made.. a little shorter on top... and a wee bit less "holdopen" material.. which is absolute sweet magic.

I would go with Hogue rubber, my older brother has huge hands so does my dad(size 19 ring finger) fingers look like sausage,s. No matter what you put on a 642 it isn,t gonna fit your hand. The Hogue,s are $15.00 and worth a try. Maybe go with smooth grips as your fingers won,t fit the grooves anyway. My j-frame disappears in my brothers hand, so I would try cheap first.:D
