dovetail rings installation

I have some dual dovetail rings to install. I haven't
tried yet, but thought I would ask ahead of time:

Do you turn the rings all the way until they stop, or
do you stop when they are lined up with the bore
(and if so, how do you determine when exactly that
is)? Thanks...

They don't stop.

You turn them until they looked lined up. If you can get ahold of one of those ring alignment kits they work best. I just did it with dead recockning and testing it by putting the scope in and seeing if it fit flush. If you don't have a Leupold Scope ring wrench, you should buy one. They are well worth the few bucks I can assure you. Good luck.

Here's how I did mine. Per the recommendations on this board, I bought a lapping kit from Sinclair, which came with lapping compound and the lapping tool (basically a big metal bar about 7" long). Then I mounted both halves of the rear ring on the bar, and twisted them onto the base until the bar pointed straight down the barrel. Did the same for the front ring, and used the bar as a guide to get the rings lined up. To true up the alignment, I proceeded to lap the bottom half of the rings.

FWIW.

I made a pair of scope alignment rods out of a 1" oak dowel.

No, probably not as accurate as the Brownells rods but functional- better than using the scope itself like most people...

Leave one rod long so you can use it on the front ring and align the dowel with the barrel.
