So I've decided to kill some birds this year. Unfortunately I only have one shotgun and one 18" barrell. I was thinking a 26" with skeet choke. But here's the question: Should I buy another barrell for my 870 (and where could I find one cheap)? Or buy another 870 I saw at big 5 that's set up the way I want for $240? Hurry seasons already started!
It all depends on how you want to spend your money. I'm sure you could probably find a barrel nearby for cheaper than the gun. If that gun is a Wingmaster it sounds like a decent enough deal. I would look for a gun or barrel with choke tubes & a 26 to 30" barrel.
Remember, it's never a bad thing to have another gun.
Depending on the layout of the area you will be dove hunting you may want a modified or full choke. The shells you use also will be a factor in choke selection. I frequently use a 12 ga 7/8 ounce load & full choke for dove. With a heavier load I would want a less restrictive choke.
Also it depends if you have to use steel shot for dove. Which it's sounding like we will have to do in Illinois next year. I would use an IC choke tube with steel. You don't want use a full choke with as you could damage the barrel.
and you have your answer. Swapping bbls is a pain - even though it doesn't take long, it's just simpler to have and leave the gun as is for its specific purpose, and pump shotguns are so ridiculously cheap new that you just have to ask why not?
