Douglas barrels

Hello to all - new to the forum though I have been lurking for a while. I have a Voere Shika in 308 that has a lot of sentimetal value. Nice rifle - my first - bought in 1969. It has a bolt design similar to Weatherby MK 5 with shroud to cover the rear - but three locking lugs rather than 9. I grew up in South Africa and have shot a lot of rounds through the rifle. Now it is time for a new barrel. I am sure that some one here has experience with Douglas barrels and will be able to comment on their quality and service. They are able to match the existing barrel profile which is a huge advantage. Their finished, threaded and chambered barrels appear to be a good deal. Since I have other 30 cal's I am going to go 7mm -08. Any comments would be appreciated. (By the way - we now live in Colorado)

thanks.

Welcome! I have a Remington 700 .308 built by Brent Clifton with a Douglas barrel. I didn't deal directly w/ Douglas, but the rifle is a tack driver, and I'm sure the Douglas barrel is the main reason. Unfortunately, Clifton no longer builds guns or stocks...shame really...he has a lot of talent.

Can't go wrong with a Douglas, or Shilen.

Ive rebarreled 2 rifles with the douglas have good luck with them so far a 308 remmy & a 25-06 both shot as well or better than factory good deal for the money.Neither of mine were preium grade but fit & finish were nice both were S.S. There are better choices out there, but I would use them again good luck. PS Welcome to TFL.

The Douglas Air Gage barrels are a favorite at my house for a hunting barrel. They are very accurate but not benchrest accurate. For a hunting barrel, they're tough to beat and I have a few in vault along with some Apex, Shilen, Ackley, McMillian, to name a few. The Douglas AG does not take a backseat to any of them. Douglas has as we chat, a commercial Mauser action that I'm having a 219 Donaldson Wasp chambered in a heavy sporter weight. My expectations are 1/2" groups or smaller at 100 yds with real expectations that it'll shoot a ragged hole at 100 once I've completed the stock work and bedding.

I wouldn't backup from buying it.

I have a Douglas SS barrel on a Rem 700 22-250.

No problems with it at all. The barrel I bought was not finished on the outside. The gunsmith shaped it to duplicate the original contour for a 700 heavy barrel.

I have put 5 shots into .4325 at 100 yards with it.

I am happy with it.

Douglas makes a pretty good barrel, as do Shilen, PacNor, Lothar Walther, and McGowen (my favorite). If you buy a Douglas, pay the extra $35 for the air gauge barrel.

Welcome to Co you might want to give Mark Chanlynn a call 303.823.6270
he makes a nice barrel got his start working for Obermeyer. I'm not sure of his prices or how long to do the work be worth the call to see.

Thank you all for your replies. Much appreciated. Looks like a lot of plusses for the Douglas - thier air gauge barrels in particular. Since Chanlyn is in Colorado I will have a look into his barrels.

Having grown up and lived within 20 minutes of Hart Rifle Barrels, I have to recommend them. Great work, outstanding accuracy even if a bit more money. My brother has a custom 98 Mauser in 25/06 with a Douglas AG barrel- it shoots flyspeck sized groups with the right handloads. It's your rifle and money; there are several fine barrelmakers to be found.

I only have one aftermarket barrel, and it's a Douglas barrel and not the premium version. The rifle shoots amazingly well. I'm not a competition shooter, so I can't comment on how their barrels would do in that arena, but this rifle shoots tiny little groups and will shoot them cold or hot, clean or dirty. The first shot is right where it should be, as will be the 5th or 10th (allowing for some reasonable cooling). If I ever rebarrel another rifle, I think I"ll have to go with Douglas again, but the premium barrel this time (why not). And I will try my best to find that same gunsmith (Webernick, I think) that did this rifle. May the wind be always at his back...
