Double in 45-70?

Winchester made a couple of them on their Model 21 semi custom shotgun frame, also in 401. There's been a few 45-70 doubles made in Europe, but it's all custom work and very expensive.

Damn... I was at a Show recently and looked at a S/S shotgun that had barrel inserts for a .45-70. Kind of neat. But for the life of me I can't remember the manufacture. :(

The only one I'm aware of is the Navy Arms Kodiak MkIV.

Hope this helps!

Autoloading .45-70's

Shin Tao, I sat down at a computer a while back, with AutoCAD fired up, trying to come up with an autoloading .45-70 based on the Browning/Remington long-recoil actions. (So I could run cast bullets or even blackpowder loads). After a while, it basically boiled down to lots of money, any way you looked at it. Maybe the newer .410 or 12 gauge shotgun Saiga Kalashnikovs would be the better jumping off point? Could you imagine a .45-70 AK, egad!

Double 45-70

A while back there was a gent advertizing in the Shotgun News who would take your double shotgun action and put double rifle barrels on it. These were low intensity loads and I remember .35 Rem, 45-70 and 50-70. I contacted him about the 50-70, but he'd lost his .50 barrel supplier at that point and for whatever reason, I never got back to him. I've still got his literature.....somewhere.....If I locate it, I'll post. This is not saying he's still in business.

I think Kodiac was the one I had seen before, do they have a web site? IIRC Mike Venturino used one some years ago with Garrett's heavy load for the 45-70,

Not Quite

I'd love to hava a 45/70 double rifle, thoughI doubt I could ever afford one. I do, however, have what I call " my poor man's express gun", an early Rossi 20" coach gun (outside hammers, with greener-style cross-bolt) to which I have hand-fitted a ramp-and post front sight and ghost ring rear sight and keep loaded with BRI Sabot-slugs (for which the sight are adjusted). It gives just about 45/70 BP ballistics, and will keep all shots from both barrels on a grapefruit out to about 30 yards with my aging eyes. I guess that's all I'll really ever need from it!

paranoia is generally a pretty good idea when THEY actually are out to get You!

I beleive Cabela's double is made in Italy by Davide Pedersoli (I have a BP Coach gun from this maker) and they run about $2500... according to Craig Boddington, with modern steel a 45-70 can be built to thump like a .458 winchester if you use a 400 grain bullet. (see Safari Rifles by Boddington)

I'm not sure of the metallurgy, or if 45-70 is counted in the "dangerous game legal" field of rifles.. but $2500 is a VERY inexpensive double rifle.

I'd like to have one.

Gibbbs rifle Co was making a bolt action 45-70 based on an enfield jungle carbine action.

I emailed Cabelas that question a month or so ago with no luck. I asked if it was limited to factory (blackpoweder level) reloads, Win 1886 level(fine by me), or Ruger level(icing on the cake), and still have no answer from the source.

I'd sure like to know.
