Double Action 22 Revolver ?

OK, since things are still hard to find and demand is way up I've been trying to think of things I wouldn't normally buy that might be easier to find in my area. My experience is mostly in 1911s and SA rugers, so I thought I might like to have a D/A revolver in 22 for cheap practice. I'm like the smith 617 because of it's size, but was wondering if anyone else made a similar size/quality gun? Also, 4 or 6 inch barrel? All my SA revolvers are 4.75-5.5 so I don't really know which I'd like better.

I'm waiting on a Ruger SP101 in .22LR; they only come in 4" barrel. Not cheap though, it's $500, or $570 right now if I go to a different gun shop. I'm waiting on the $500 from my LGS.

For cheap .22 plinking in the meantime I got a Heritage Rough Rider, but that's SA only. I paid $215, but you can get them for less.

There aren't a lot of them made new,,,

For new revolvers:
  • S&W 617 (K-Frame)
  • S&W Model 17 (K-Frame in their Classic Line)
  • S&W Models 317 and 63 (J-Frames)
  • S&W Model 43C (J-Frame DAO)
  • Charter Arms Target Pathfinder
  • Ruger SP-101 (New version)
  • Taurus Model 94
  • Rossi Model 98

There are one or two more by European manufacturers,,,
But I believe I've got them all for US and South American makes.

For used revolvers:
S&W Model 18 (4" K-Frame) - My personal favorite.
S&W Model 17 (6" K-frame)
S&W Model 34 (4" J-Frame)
S&W Model 43 (3.5" J-Frame in alloy)
S&W Model 63 (4" J-Frame in stainless)
Ruger SP-101 (Old version)
Rossi 511 (Copy of S&W Model 63)
Rossi (several models)
H&R (several models)
High Standard (several models)
Colt (several models way too expensive for my blood)

There are more than I can remember in the used category.

Go to gunbroker.com,,,
Select: Browse categories > Firearms > Pistols > Revolvers,,,
Then enter 22 LR in the search field,,,
You will get this:

This is by no means a complete list of .22 revolvers,,,
But it should give you a good starting point.

Happy hunting,,,

Stick with SA

I bought the Ruger SP101 4" .22 and didn't like it much at all. Very stiff trigger for DA shooting and very stiff hammer for SA shooting. Changed the springs and though the trigger was much smoother, I had about a 25% to 40% misfire rate. I ended up selling it and purchasing a Ruger Single Ten. Love shooting this gun so much that I then purchased a Ruger New Model Blackhawk .357.

I'm pretty much set on the full underlug barrel, so the classics are out. Got to hold a 6" 617 @ lgs today. Like the feel, but it seemed nose heavy. I'm hoping the 4" is better. And it needs a nice set of finger groove combat grips.

Hello Wolfe 21,,,

I'm pretty much set on the full underlug barrel, so the classics are out.

If your heart is set on a full underlug,,,
Keep an eye out for the old model Ruger SP-101.

They're hard to find and not cheap when you do,,,
But they are fine shooters none-the-less.

I had one in the early 90's,,,
My only complaint was the tiny front and rear sight.

But they are out there,,,
I was bidding on one just last month at Gunbroker.com.

My ex wife got the gun in our divorce,,,
Damn but I miss that little shooter.

Aarond shows a good one... BUT, if you have your heart set on a 4" 617, then get one. I also have an SP101-22, one of the new 8 shot ones, and its a great revolver, but its made for a different purpose than the 617. Does it shoot as good as a 617? Well... maybe, but the 617 just has, well... 2 more rounds, for one thing. Either will serve you well. The SP101-22 is the only DA 22 revolver that comes close to the 617, being commonly manufactured today.

That's for target ammo. It wont be long before you can find the 18-25$ a per 500ish rounds.

I'm down to about 12000 rounds of the cheap stuff so hopefully it will be sooner then later that they catch up with demand. You can find most anything else already so 22s should not be far behind

Back when I first joined the PD in the late 70's, we used the S&W M18 in 22LR for initialization to shooting. Later, we got training with the S&W M15 (the duty revolver). It was a natural progression from a small caliber (w/ cheap ammo) K frame to another K frame in .38 special.

BTW.....I bought my first handgun, a S&W M18, just so I could get more practice.

Aloha, Mark

Well, not exactly what I was looking for, I picked up a 686 talo 3-5-7 seres 5" today. Feels really good, less nose heavy than my 6" gp100, but it needs new grips.
Any recommendations for a good round butt combat grip in a dark wood or black material?
