So I was watching this new National Geographic show about people preparing for the end of the world.

Anyway, they were showing this guy doing firearms training in the desert with his 2 kids. Suddenly, they do a dramatic cut and the guy's laying on the ground with his hand all bandaged up, saying his gun had a "malfuntion". So here I was thinking that maybe he had shot a squib or something and his gun kaboomed. Nope, he later explained that he put his hand in front of the barrel and the gun just "went off" and blew his thumb off.

Leave it to national tv to make gun owners look responsible.

I thought this thread got locked.

Eh,what can you do,if the world ends, the taxes will still need to be paid and I'll still have to work.

And I'll still own two great revolvers and two rimfire rifles to defend the house with.

As far as the finger killer goes ,as Forrest Gumps Mama said,"Stupid is as Stupid does."

Leave it to national tv to make gun owners look responsible.

He didn't help his own cause any with putting a hole in his hand.

I do like the idea of "preppers" versus "survivalists" though.

Where is a reasonable forum to discuss being prepared? Know it's not TFL because it inevitably goes sideways and most other forums I've seen appear a bit on the tinfoil hat side of things.

The guy on TV should have followed the basic gun rules and it would have helped his cause and ours.

That show went in the toilet when I saw that! Put people on there that we can all learn from! I guess that showed us what not to do????:D

The other one was closed for being only peripherally related to firearms.

This one, discussing gun handling and a negligent discharge, is on topic.

For now.

If it slips into the subject of TEOTWAWKI, it will be closed. So, slew it back on topic, quickly!

...he put his hand in front of the barrel and the gun just "went off" and blew his thumb off.

Irresponsible gun owners make themselves look bad....not national TV.

Every month there's a thread about poor gun handling at a shooting range. Nothing new and no one to blame except for the idiot in question.

Gun owners "preppers" TEOTWAWKI - were made to look bad in the X-Files and Millenium TV shows also. I definately think there's a Hollywood predjudice.

I hate this kind of crap.

This is exactly what i thought would happen. this kind of show makes all gun owners look like paranoid freaks.

I'm not saying it isn't fun to play pretend and buy that water filter I'll probably never use or the 1000 rounds of 5.56 thats a bit of over kill, but this show is giving the general public exactly what they thought before they watched the show: anyone who has even a weeks worth of supplies in their House in case of a tornado/flood/power outage/etc is a freak.

lets pick out the biggest idiots in the country, put them on TV, and either let our children mimic their behavior or mock anyone who has even a slightly similar interest.

I put this on another forum, a modified 'Hancock' line:

All you people, who hold a gun by the barrel, you are all idiots. Guns come with foregrips, stocks, handles, and slings - USE THEM.

You are not in control of the trigger group, and since all guns are to be treated as loaded - you fail.

I'm beginning to feel the same about that show, good ideas, but I think it has turned my wife off more than on in regards to my preps.

I had the same thoughts as the OP. Unfortunately then the guy said something to the effect of "I had a malfunction where my thumb went in front of the muzzle".

The only malfunction took place in the machine between his ears. Hopefully he uses this as a lesson not only for himself but for his kids and gets some professional refresher courses on firearms safety for them all.
