Does this Enfield sound like a deal?

This is an original Ishapore Arsenal Enfield 2A in .308 Winchester. This firearm is in NRA Good condition with very good bore. These
firearms will group 2” or better at 100 yards with proper ammunition. They were manufactured in the late 1960’s for the
Indian Police Departments. Still packed in arsenal storage cosmoline. All metal surfaces are original black painted--strips easily
if desired. It has an arsenal repair patch on the butt stock. Good addition to your military collection.

Who the hell is 'Ishapore'...are any Enfields but the Britts any good? What kind of price do I expect to pay for one? Just looking around....

I have no doubt that some wise sage will pop in after me and provide you with more and better information, but here 'goes. The Ishapores are well made Indian versions of the Enfield #1 MKIII SMLE as made in Britain and Australia. They were chambered in .308, I believe, because the switch had already been made to the FN-FAL in .308, but more rifles (and less expensive ones) were still needed for various uses (police, rear-guard troops, etc.). Some "Ishy" fans claim that the actions are stronger than their English counterparts because of better metallurgy and heat treatment- but I can neither confirm nor deny this. They are usually decent shooters and in good shape. I Can't comment on the 2" group @100yds except to say that the ladder-type sights on this gun are not known for their long-range precision. I believe they come with 12 round mags, not 10 as in the .303 SMLE. There don't seem to be many fence-sitters when it comes to Enfields- people either love them or hate them. I would like to own one of the Ishapores, but the ones I've come accross appear to have been used as tent stakes at some point. Check Shotgun News for prices. I would imagine that an Ishapore in the condition described would go for about $100. Hope this helps!

i picked up one of the .308 ones. the thing had more packing grease on and in it than a hooker on payday. but seriously. they were made for the indian gov't as a home guard/police rifle in .308 to keep the same ammo as the fn's the military was using. was told from a few sources that these guns were probably only fired to sight in and were not used in any action. judging from the look of the rifle bore (mine looks to be at least 90%) i would tend to agree. after spending alot of time degreasing it i went to the range to see how it shoots. using cavim (venezulan ammo) off a semi secure bench rest i was able to place all 12 rds inside the black @ 100yds and three of those were within the X-ring!!no they were not touching each other, but when i was able to place all rds fired into the black @100rds i am a happy camper. and this with the crappy paint on the sights. my first shooting of this rifle was @ 50yds just to see how it functioned and what if any grouping there was. my 50yd shoots were placed into a 4x4 target needless to say , i was impressed. the trigger is sloppy to say the least. and after about 50-60n rds that stock w/metal trap boor plate kicked my ass. so i will be replacing it with a rubber pad. was considering a synthetic stock but (to me) it would take away from that "look" parts are not cheap mags run $30ea. the extractor spring is the weak link but i have an e-m add of a guy in texas who has lots of enfield parts. for $100+ that i have into it its a keeper.

The Indian Ishapores originally chambered in .308 are stronger, using better metallurgy and heat treating. The .308 bolt head will have a 14T proof stamped on it. See Ian Skennerton's book The Enfield Story for details.

Good cheap rifles. Not as finely made as the No.1MkIII* Australian Lithgows or British versions, but bargains.

I want one of these! Can you please tell me where to get one. I've been looking for a decent one for a while,\
thanks

Get a copy of the Shotgun news, and look under SOG or J&G sales. I got mine from SOG (Southern Ohio Guns). I don't know a web address for either.

Ishapore is a city in India.
Problem with these is that the extractor is made for 303 Brit rimmed cartridge and as the .308 is rimless, extraction and especially ejection is not always reliable. They are handy little rifles, but I prefer my Enfield number 5, and mk1-no.4's in .303brit.
