Does Taurus QC Suck?

Just sent my third Taurus revolver back to the factory in the past 14 months. The latest was my new 415 SS .41 mag. The action locked up after the first round was fired. I have also had to send back a new Mod. 66 and a Mod 85CH w/ less than 300 rds. fired. I won't even mention a POS PT-111 I used to have. I pretty much feel like I'm losing my trust in their products when it comes to relying on them as a carry piece. I still have confidence in my Mod. 85Ti, but I kinda feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop with it.

Right now I'm thinking about selling/ trading most all my Tauri for either an SP-101 or possibly a S&W 65LS, 625, 610 or 629. I'll use my other Smith snubbies, or the 101, for my carry revolvers.

Am I just a lemon magnet, or is Taurus quality control going to ca-ca?

Probably no more than any other gun company out there these days. The most respected manufacturer will make the ocasional boo-boo. All of them made a better gun 10 to 20 years ago, IMO.

Over the years I've owned 7 Taurus firearms. Two of them were from the "bad old days" of the company, and those 2 never gave me a problem. I'm experiencing about a 40% defect rate overall, 60% (3 of 5) if you only count the ones I've bought new over the past 3 years. That is unacceptable. I will say to their credit that the repaired firearms have functioned OK, but I have not put more than about 100 rds. through any of them since they came back from the factory. I guess that if I get all the junk then everyone else must be doing quite well. I KNEW I was put on this Earth for a reason!

Yes it does.

and despite the fact that they make some of the collest revolvers around, for precisely that reason I won't buy one.

Hmmm, strange how certain things happen to certain people.

I have a mod 85ch with hundreds of rnds through it with 0 probs.

Friend has PT-92 with at least a few thousand rnds through it. 0 probs.

Now both of these guns are close to 10 years old.

a few weeks ago I aqquired a brand new mod 65 357mag.
i havent shot it much yet but I'll let you know how it holds up.

Every Taurus firearm I've ever shot has had a good solid feel to it. every bit the equal to a Smith /Wesson.

Sorry youre having probs.

disgruntledPW,

If I may ask, what did you have to send the 66 and 85CH back for?

(We know what the Millenium was sent back for; I wonder, do they cover "this gun sucks" under warranty? ;) )

Well, I DID have a little problem with my first 731UL...

However, Taurus replaced the pistol in under a week with the same model. Only the new one had been factory tuned and tested. They cut the DA trigger pull in half and also lowered the single action pull by quite a bit. The crane on the new one closes so slickly, I first thought it didn't catch. This Taurus is a fine revolver. (And I put silverwood grips on it too. It looks just like Tamara's and Lendringser's. :) )

My wife carries a blue Total Ti 85 and she's had no problems at all.

Tamara- The 85CH went back as the firing pin return spring broke. If I had dry fired the gun w/o snap caps I would understand this problem. But I have used some type of snap cap when doing dry fire exercises for many years. The 66 went back for what seems to be a common problem w/Taurus- cylinder binding up after shooting a few rounds through it. Unfortunately Taurus does not cover "this gun sucks" problems, which is too bad. I kinda liked the feel of the PT-111. Guess I'm just the lucky one.

I love it when people complain about Taurus handguns. It just means that I'll pay less for the used ones I'm always finding. Stick with models they still sell and they'll fix any problems quickly. That being said - I would not take a PT-111 if given it for free, unless something else was offered to sweeten the deal.

I've owned 3 revolvers, still have one. No problems. A co-worker sent his .22 back, they fixed it and works fine now. My biggest beef with Taurus has been the triggers but that is common with a lot of makers today. The lifetime warranty is nice but I haven't had to use it.

If I'd had that many lemons in a row I'd have lost faith too dsgrntldPW. I think that you may have just hit a really bad streak though. I haven't had any problem with the 4 Taurus autos/revolvers I have or seen any problems with 4 others that my Dad and a friend has. None of those 8 are the newer polymer autos or Titantium revolvers though. Seems Taurus does better when sticking to steel and proven designs like the PT92.

TAURUS QUALITY

Their quality control is very hit-or-miss!! I don't fool with them for that reason.

I buy new S&W and am very happy with them. NEVER sent one back!!

Excellent concept in product line. Bad execution. I for one stay away from them. In fairness a buddy has a Model 92 that is a reliable pistol and it has had thousands of rounds through it.

I have a Taurus 415T that has had about 200 rounds through it so far. No problems at all. Firing all 210 and 250 grain rounds.
