Does size matter???

The question is relating to Shells... not anthing else!

Meaning I have a winchester 1200 pump action shotgun.

It has a 3 inch magnum barrel and I want to confirm that putting in 2 &3/4 inch or even 2&1/2 inch shells in .. isnt effecting my shooting or infact the pattern of the shot.

I read in a mag recently that by putting in smaller shells .. you will find that the shot melts together in the barrel... and causing it to make a uneven pattern.

Is this true.. what is your dealing with it.

Also one more question..

what is the best choke on my shotgun for pigeon shooting etc. I am using mod .. but dont like the imp cycle or the full choke. Is this my shooting or is this choke the best for the shotgun?

I don't know what magazine you read the shot melt together in, but I would NOT buy it again as this is pure BS. One of my guns I use for Skeet and field work is a Berreta 390 with a 3" chamber. I have patterened it with both 2 3/4" and 3" shells and the patterns are fine.

I've been shooting 2 3/4 7 1/2 oz and 8 oz dove loads in my Rem 870 Magnum since day one with no issues. My pattern with my mod and imp mod appears to be even. I haven't fired any 3" shells, so i cant say the pattern is different.

Thank you all for your replies.
I assumed that was the case about the pattern.. I thought what a load of bs.. but figured I would ask anyway.

The guys theory in the mag was that the poweder ... actually circles around the shot... instead of having it go from behind.... I really need to copy it and send it to you .

as for that chart for the chokes... BRILLIANT!!! I thank you kind sir!!!!

Whoever actually wrote the article is nothing more than an idiot and actually knows nothing about plastic shot containers. I wonder why the base is hollowed out and the edges thinned?? Hold gas and pressure BEHIND the column,,, ya think? It is hard to understand why a gun rag would actually publish something so dumb. I would love to see a copy of the article myself.

Take you gun to the patterning board and shoot each shell type.

Different guns of the same model pattern slightly differently.

You will find out for yourself.

2 3/4" shells loaded with #8 shot is pretty much the diet of my Mossberg 500. I like to be able to shoot all day with minimal fatigue on my shoulder (wrist if i'm using pistol grips) and on my wallet. 3" magnum shells are expensive. Sure them 3" magnum slugs are a real hoot to shoot, but definatly not all day.
