Does my Mossberg 590 Mariner take 2 3/4" shells, 3" shells or both?

I've used the darned thing (although it's been years and it has remained in the closet for quite some time), but I can't even remember what size shells I got for it once upon a time. (I'm not at home right now, so I can't check the few that I still have on hand.)

Is it normal for such a shotgun to be able to take EITHER length shell? Is that what I should suspect of my Mossberg 590 Mariner?

What are the benefits/reasons for selecting one type of shell over another? Which is the most common?

the 590 takes 2 3/4 and 3, 2 3/4 is great for target, and all kinds of loads, 3 is usually for hunting, yours should take both.

hope this helps

Thanks! :)

Okay, one more question, if I may:

If I want to use slugs in it, what should I be asking for? Don't I have to use "sabot" slugs or something? What are they, and are they different because of the fact that the bore is smooth?

I appreciate the info help.

No, sabot slugs are designed for shotguns with rifled barrels, you can order an extra barrel i think, the slugs you want to use are rifled slugs or brenneke slugs, they are designed much like the shuttlecocks in badminton, they are solid in the fron and like a huttle cock in the back, and when fired they back expands and creates a seal. Get rifled slugs for a smoothbore, saboted slugs tend to tumble out of a smoothbore barrel.

Hope that helps.

It does help, thanks. :)

Not sure when I'll get to use the shotgun to try them out, though. I've never used slugs in the thing, but I think the idea is cool.

Does using slugs change the recoil characteristics of the shotgun? I imagine that with a tighter seal, I might feel more recoil, but what do I know? I'm a shotgun neophyte.

I love taking that thing apart and putting it back together, though! :D

Now that I re-looked at the manual, I am confident that I can take it down without having to follow the instructions anymore.

My AR-15, on the other hand...
