Does Anyone Shoot .260 Remington or Was It Stillborn ?

I remember reading some article recently by Craig Boddington (rifle reviewer for some gun mag) that he had his wife shooting the new .260 cartridge from Remington.

He said it had it all, low recoil, short action, accurate, powerful enough for all but the largest game etc etc, yet I have heard little about this cartridge since.

Does anyone here shoot it, and is it realy "all that" ?

I'm thinking about rebarreling my bolt action match rifle from 243 Win to 260 Rem when the present barrel gives up the ghost; supposedly the extra 1/2 mm in diameter makes a difference in the rate of chamber throat errosion.

Any comments from the Highpower shooters out there?

I have not shot one, but the owner of a local gun shop has said that the 260 seems to be undeservedly withering on the vine. Same old story unfortunately, 6.5mm cartridges are just not that popular. Among people who are seriously into rifles, 6.5s are very popular. Most of the guys who limit their rifle shooting to a few months of deer season though go with 243's, 270s and the various 30 cals. Sad, but true.

My teenage daughter has been shooting her Rem 260 for two years, now. She has taken several whitetails and exotic deer with it and is very pleased with everything about the caliber and the rifle -- a Remington Mtn. LSS. I have her shooting a 140gr. factory load, and it is quite a lethal round for animals out to 150 yds. Beyond that, I would have to speculate, because she has yet to take anything further.

At the range, she shoots really nice groups, even with factory loads.

Previously, she carried a Sako in .243 and prior to that, a Rem 700VS in .222. The weight and report of the 260 are more acceptable to her than these, but of course, these are subjective criteria.

I have asked our local dealer about sales of the 260, and he maintains that it is gathering momentum. Maybe it is just one of those niche rounds that will find a small and faithful following. Personally, I hope it hangs around for a long time -- it seems just about perfect for folks of small stature or for anyone who wants a solid performing round without all the bang and bump of larger cartridges.
