Does anyone know about this shotgun.

My dad gave me a shotgun a while back and I know very little about it. It is a 12 gauge bolt action, yes I said bolt action, shotgun. It is stamped with "Western Field Model EMN 175 12 ga full choke" on the barrel. It has a detachable clip that holds 2 shells. There is no date that I can find. I had never seen or heard of a bolt action shotgun before and my dad said all he knew about them is he thinks they didn't sell well due to the gun discharging prematurely if the bolt was operated too quickly. All I have been able to find out on the web is that it was made for sale through Montgomery Wards. Any help would be appreciated.

The shotgun was made by Mossberg and is their model 385K. If the gun discharges when closing the bolt you most likely have a sear problem. If you are going to shoot it, get it to a good smith to be worked on before shooting it anymore. Good Shooting - John K

thanks.

Thanks, that helps, I have never shot the gun, that discharge thing is just what my dad said. Thanks for the info.

If it is a Mossy, you've got a reliable shotgun, tho slow on repeat shots. I took my biggest buck with one.

There's plenty of them out there, but you rarely see a used one for sale. People tend to hang on to them, and lots have been worked over into dedicated slug guns with rifled bbls, scopes and light but SAFE triggers.

Get that in to the smith, it's worth fixing....

I have the Mossberg, and this is my reliable turkey gun. It has the exterior choke. some guy gave it to my Dad out of the blue one day, saying his bird hunting days in Mexico were over. I can only wonder what shots this old 12ga. has made...
