Does anyone have the 4 pound beast?

Does anyone here have a Dragoon? If so, how do they shoot? Is it accurate and how far? I held one tonight and it just may be the next one on the list. And what is the difference between the 1st 2nd and 3rd model?

The Wikipedia article on the Colt Dragoon is a good, brief, fairly accurate summary of the various models. I have one, probably my favorite BP revolver, I like the heft, firing it will full power loads is like firing an S&W M-28 with 38 Specials.

Mine is an ASM.

I find it to be quite accurate up to about 45 Grains. (.454 rb). At 50 grains I can get (IIRC 1100 fps) but the groups get larger.

I don't get the typical loading lever drop but I think this pistol has not been fired much. That malady is probably not far into the future.

I have a high number of ASM manufactured revolvers and by and large they are good pistols. Perhaps if I had the chance to shoot them more I would notice the effects of the soft inner parts which ASM is noted for.

Anyway the Walker is a lot of fun. Very emotional to shoot.

I have a 1st Model Dragoon which I converted to .45 Colt with a Kirst cylinder. The heft and feel of a Dragoon is really an eye opener. I have a Walker also, a real hand cannon....:D

Whoops!

I gave you chrony data for the Walker, also ASM. I never measured bullet sped on the dragoons. First and Second model also both ASMs.

Neat toys to play with for sure. I have a third model by Uberti and its a bit much to hold steady off hand with one hand but is a total blast to shoot. I had to square up the loading lever lock base cut a bit so it would not drop the lever with the heavy loads.

On the down side they do not have a cap cut in the recoil sheild so I had to cut one in there as it was dragging spent caps to a degree at times. This one is also less tolarant of fouling than my Army .44 as about 4 cylinder fulls is about all she will go till it takes some manual assistance to the cylinder to cock. The arbor is huge as all get out but has very tiny grease grooves and that is only for a portion of the lenght of the thing.

All in all I am keeping the thing as it is still a total blast to shoot.
