Does anybody make a 10 rd. mag for the Mini-14 that works??

I just bought a John Masen 10 round mag from CDNN that is garbage. The spring is too weak---won't feed a single round or hold the bolt open. It looks like its well made and finished--too bad looks aren't everything---because it won't work worth a damn. I figured since 10 rounders are still legal that someone would make a quality mag. I have tried USA, Triple-K and Western 20 and 30 rounders that were all garbage--so i haven't tried the 10 rounders from them. And please no Mini-14 vs AR-15 debates----i have both. I'm just looking for help with 10 rounders for the Mini-14. Thanks in advance.

I just shot my new Mini-14 Ranch Rifle for the first time last week. Among others, I'd bought some USA Mags a couple of years ago before they were banned in California. I'd read terrible reports of USA mags, but I got some anyway (along with PMIs and others that have a better reputation). Anyway, the 20-round USA mag I tried worked flawlessly. I probably filled and emptied it 3 or 4 times. I was expecting problems, so this was a pleasant surprise. Anyway, I know this isn't a thorough test, and other USA mags may not be as good, but from my limited experience, USAs may be worth trying. By the way, the one I used was stainless, if that makes a difference. I think I'll try some USA 10-rounders myself. I was considering ordering some John Mason mags as well, but will hold off on this, given your poor experience.

Have you contacted the manufacturer? I know the feeling when something doesn't work correctly from the start but give them a chance to make good on their product. Everybody that makes anything has a bad apple come through every once and a while. Most people that manufacture shooting products are very good about taking care of customer complaints or replacing defective merchandise.

i will not buy or run usa mags but when i bought my mini 14 i also got 2 2os 3 30s and a couple of 10s and the 1 stock 5 rnder.these were no name and a couple usa mags.beleive it or not they all work fine.one of the 20 didnt work too good so i disassembled it and messed with the spring tension.that made it work just fine.
i only run usgi ,orilites in my AR-15 THOUGH>

I bought 3 of the 10 rounders off the http://www.johnmasen.com site 2 months ago.I was very impressed as they looked very well built.Took them to range and none of them worked!!!Contacted Claudia at their site and got a refund..no problem. She did say they had problems with last batch and are in the process of re-tooling the machine that presses the mags. She said check back in a couple months and new mags should be ready. The 10 round John Masen mags have a reputation of being one of the best you can buy(before their troubles.I will get a couple of them when they get the bugs worked out, even though i have 2 PMI's that work very well.

I've often harrumphed and grumped over Ruger's decision to quit making their own ten-round mags. I've kept the one I got with a Mini, years ago; guess I'll have to buy another Mini to go with it. :D

Maybe if enough folks wrote to Ruger and said, "Hey! Ain't you in bidness to make money? Make us some ten-round mags!"

if they were smart, instead selling out before selling out was cool, then they would have FLOODED the market with factory 20s and 30s instead of voluntarily keeping them out of civillian hands before any 'ban' was even on the horizon. if they were as affordable as ar mags, then the mini would be selling like hot cakes.

The reason Ruger stopped making 10 round mags for the Mini-14 is because after 3 quick rounds, accuracy drops off (due to heating up of the thin barrel.) The Mini-14 is not meant to be a AR replacement. It is an accurate (used to be cheap) .223 semi for a few rounds. Remember, it is coyotes your are shooting, not enemy soldiers.

Yea, I got a 30 round pray and spray mag from USA, but I don't use it cause it is sub standard.

If you want something more you will have to step up to an AR or something else.

I like my Mini-14 but I think it is obsolete without a lot of work. It is what it is.

Brad,I think what you are referring to is bench accuracy.the mini-14 as it heats up has plenty of practical accuracy built in.I have seen far to many students go through classes with them(me included)that never had any problems shooting them after the barrel heats up.Its not uncommon in classes to shoot 75 and 100 yard groups the size of a clay pigeon.

This wont cut it on the the bench but in the real world it will do!

To Gunmart

Gunmart, you are 100% correct. I guess like a lot of folks I get caught up in that MOA 300 yard thing. Heck I can't make out a stop sign at 300 yards! 3 inch groups of .223 high velocity round at 100 yards will kill any large animal dead dead dead.

I bought my brand new 1999 Mini-14 stainless synthetic stock ranch rifle for that Y2K potential. I got a great deal on it before the prices went up. 512 bucks for what is essentially an urban assault rifle. 512 bucks! The price of a Glock and I have a real weapon! (love Glocks for what they are by the way).

I beg forgiveness for transgressing on what is essentially, for the money, one great, combat accurate, reliable, semi-automatic rifle.

I do wish for a really good 10 round clip though. I can't find any 20 rounders, the 10 rounders just don't work, and the 30 round USA mag for plinking only are crap.

Perhaps the practical solution is to stock up on factory 5 rounders, shoot straight, and practice reloading real fast.

Maybe if enough folks wrote to Ruger and said, "Hey! Ain't you in bidness to make money? Make us some ten-round mags!"
A while ago, some folks on this board did that. Ruger sent them two free 5 round mags. After it got to be a popular thing, they just started sending a patch. Wish I had gotten on the bandwagon early!
