That is going to vary widely on each agency and if it is a brand new officer i.e. going through an academy or one that has been on the job.

If we are talking changing guns there are some other factors like is it a similar gun or a complete change like going from a Glock to a 1911. A change like that is going to require a certain amount of training first. If it is something like a going from a generation 3 to a generation 4 Glock they are just going to shoot whatever mandated qualification and go about their way.

most police forces get their guns thru a contract that is renewed every xx number of years. and even then unless they hate the previous gun most are more likely to keep what they have for a few reasons.

1. cost
2. they have replacement guns and parts already
3. no need for new accessories for the gun, holsters, mags
4. is there a benefit of them changing, capacity, safety issue, old ones are falling apart?

many factors are involved in this for a fed, county, state, town police force.

in a peace officer position its a little different as most of those are able to pick their sidearm from a few that are offered.

with the post about le changing to the new gun you have to look at what was offered by them to get the le agency to switch. Free training, xtra goodies for each gun, stank load of ammo, full price buy back of old guns.

manufacturers will often take it in the ass to put new guns in the hands of prestigious agencies just to promote their guns.

if LA swat or nypd started shooting ?????you bet other agencies would be referred to them to see that they switched
