Does a rifle calibre make more sense?

I'm in the market for a lever action of some kind but can't decide. Maybe ya'all can help. I've had 30-30's so I don't think I want another. I'm really interested in the 35 Remington OR a 44 magnum Marlin like the 1894S or 1894P. I like the Winchester offering in 444 Marlin but the cost of ammo is way to much. I MIGHT be going with my brother-in-law deer huntin' this fall but mostly it will be hiking, camping, bash around gun. Would you go with a rifle calibre or does the 44 magnum have enough power in a carbine? As far as ammo cost is concerned the 44 maggie wins hands down. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. J. Well, since you don't want a thutty-thutty, the .44 Maggie isn't a bad alternative. If you don't go overboard for distance, it'll kill a deer. Good for plinking; good for defense...The side-ejection of the Marlin means that you have a better arrangement if you want to put a scope on it.

If you know somebody who's halfway smart who reloads, work a deal with him. Save money, learn the how-to of "roll your own".

.44 Mag. and hot loads are fine for deer out to 75-100 yards.

The .35 Remington is a wonderful cartridge, but is really no more than a 125-150 yard cartridge because much past that and the trajectory starts to become pretty loopy.

This situation you pose, like so many others in life, provides yet another opportunity to add to one's gun collection.

I killed a couple of bambi's with a 44 mag and you can't go wrong with a Marlin. Then again I like my .308's too. you can usually find a good .308 for the same price you can a Marlin 44. Savage makes some excellent rifles and if you want a really cool carbine there are Spanish FR8's that can be had at gun shows or the auctions based on the Mauser 98 bolt action.
