Does .45AR ammo work in Ruger convertables.

I can't say for sure about the New Models (2 screw) but I used to have a 3 screw convertable and ARs would not work. They fit in the cylinder/chamber but the rim was too thick to fit between the cylinder and frame.

The original purpose of the Auto Rim was so that the ammo would work in revolvers designed for .45 ACP with moon clips. So I guess if a revolver takes .45 ACP in clips, then Auto Rim should work. Not positive about this though since .45 revolver designs have changed even though they still take .45 ACP in moonclips.

(Mike - you out there?)

Ruger SA .45 Convertibles will not take Auto Rim; they do not have clearance for the clips (How would you get them in the gun, anyway?) or the thick AR rim.

The AR will not fit in a stock gun. I understand that there is a gunsmith out in CA who has faced off the rear of the cyl. on a couple so it would work for about $50. The only advantage to doing so would be to facilitate the loading (and crimping) of heavy SWC bullets. Interesting trick but not crucial in my opinion.

However--the ACP cases work fine as long as you pay attention to getting a clean taper crimp and watch any interference/build-up at the front of the chamber. Ejection is exactly the same as any other ctg in an SA--just poke 'em out.

I have a convertible .45 and shoot mostly ACPs in it. The more I shoot it the more I like it.

But...wouldn't the autorim cases work OK in the 45LC cylinder? Sure, the freebore would be just nuts :) but it would work, right?

The rims might be too fat though...?

Nope. Rim on the AR is too thick. .45LC have a thinner & narrower rim.

If you need a shorter cartridge for the .45LC, find some .45 Schofield cartridges. About 1/8" shorter. Usually found in cowboy loads.

The Ruger SA .45ACP's headspace on the rim, like an autopistol. The AR wouldn't have enough clearance to work.

You're sure about that? First of all semiauto pistols are supposed to headspace on the mouth although some will say they headspace on the extractor which it isn't designed to do. I don't see how the SA revolver can headspace on the rim without using moonclips.
