Doctor asks about my firearm ownership,,,

I had my quarterly check-up yesterday,,,
This is the first time my doctor has asked me directly about firearms ownership.

His question was:
"I understand that you are a firearm owner. Do you have a 1911?"

I replied that I didn't and asked why.

Turns out that he's been considering buying a handgun and obtaining his carry permit. His question about the 1911 is because his brother-in-law owns one and recommended the pistol.

After about 5 minutes of conversation we have set a tentative day to go to the range and do some shooting.

I jokingly said, won't the AMA revoke your membership?

He replied: I wish they would, it's an expensive organization to belong to.

Anyways, as soon as the weather warms up a bit we're going to the range and give him a handgun tour from SA .22 revolvers up to DA/SA semi-automatics.

Not what I expected when he first asked me.

Same thing crosses my mind. Was it your hat, or did he assume that when you were talking with his hot receptionist that you really did have a gun in your pocket? :D

About a year ago (maybe a little less) I was asked for photo-ID by one of the clinic's office workers.

I inadvertantly handed her my CWL card instead of my drivers license.

The woman went somewhat berserk and called their security,,,
He (at least 70 year old man) wanted to frisk me and search my briefcase.

Needless to say I created quite a bit of noise that day,,,
My pistol was safely locked in it's cabled box in my baby truck,,,
I refused to be frisked or to allow them to search inside my briefcase.

Apparently after that I became quite well known in the clinic.

The same thing happened to me at the Credit Union one time,,,
I handed the teller my CWL instead of my drivers license.

She called her manager over who said they didn't recognize it as valid ID,,,
They hold the mortgage on my home but I moved my checking & savings accounts later that week.

Now I keep my CWL in a different slot in my wallet.

That's hilarious Aarond. I would have milked it for all it's worth... but I'm just like that. Case in point... I have "check ID" on the back of my credit cards (both of them) rather than signing with my name. I was shopping with my wife a couple of weeks ago and the cashier asked to see my ID (which I actually like them to do, that's the whole point). I joked with my wife so the cashier could hear... "Do you think they can tell I just got out of prison?". Gosh, that really gets my wife's blood boiling, so I only do it once in a while... :D

I asked my doctor a couple of years ago to check my blood lead levels since I do a lot of reloading. He cooperated and didn't even raise an eyebrow.

hell ive gone shooting and hunting with my doc.....the only thing he asks me when we are hunting or shooting is if i took any of my pain meds he prescibes me for my screwed up lower back and when how much etc.....almost every time the answer is no but brought them with me so when we quit i can take one lol
 
My doctor is an active shooter, and we sometimes talk guns when I see him. But he's also NEVER asked me any other questions about my ownership. My answer to EVERY question asked about this is: "I refuse to answer any question not related to my health".
A more polite way of saying "It's none of your effing business!"
 
I traded a couple of action jobs for dome dental work, years ago.

I know all my regular Doc's and they already know I'm a shooter. If they want to talk guns, we'll talk guns.

If the question comes up in a written questionnaire, I'm writing in...

"Seriously? What's your religion?"

My fav is to say just after buying a new gun from the LGS is ( see I knew my parole officer was wrong , I CAN buy a gun ) :D It started when I was with a friend at the LGS . I was just finishing up with the guy behind the counter when my buddy came up and said ( they let you buy that ? I thought your PO said no guns :eek:) He said it loud and 70% of the customers and most of the employees turned and looked at us . I just cracked up and have been saying something like that ever sense .:)

If he documents your answer in the notes he takes and later you release your medical history for some reason (life insurance) then that party will have knowledge of your answer. Hope he is just curious and a gun lover and does not add this information to your medical history records........

It is the first time I've been asked me about guns though,,,
And due to all the hooplah I've read about it I was taken aback.

That's why I thought it was sort of humorous when I found out he wanted information about a specific type of handgun.

Anyways, we're going to go shooting,,,
I have a friend who will loan me his 1911 for the day.

So if in this case someone asked you about firearms your reply would be that its none of their business. Nice way to help someone that shows a interest in firearms.
 
just curious, can a business "not recognise" a valid state issued license as ID?

The never seem to have any problem with a driver's license. Why would they have a problem with a handgun license?
 
Here in Virginia, a CHL isn't a photo ID. In fact, it looks like something a kid could throw together on an inkjet printer, so if I were a business, I probably wouldn't accept it.
 
I went to my doctor Monday. All we talked about was his new XDs 45 and which defensive ammo to buy. That and how full of it Obama is.

I also don't think asking about firearms is mandatory under the health care act.
 
In GA, the CCW permit looks like an old dependent ID with your thumbprint where a picture would be. No photo to be had.

Shoot, my old Doctor shot dove with Pop and his son was in my Boy Scout troop and earned the Shotgun merit badge under tutelage of Pops.
