my apologies if this has been said before. im new to this forum. do you guys think its wise to change your edc gun. imo it would be wiser to always carry the same PRIMARY gun for familiarity and reliabilty reasons. what do yall think and what are the reasons why or why not?

If you mean change it once and stick with it, I don't see much of a problem in that, IF you train and familiarize yourself with it. I wouldn't want to make any radical changes in the mode of carry, but I don't see a problem with changing guns. But changing each and every day, i can see that being a problem. Always having that split second of doubt thinking "what gun do i have today?" I wouldn't want that.

I don't think it's a good idea to switch back and forth between self-defense guns with significantly different manuals of arms. If you need to use a gun in self-defense, it's probably not a good time to try to remember what gun you're carrying so you can decide how you need to hold it, whether the safety needs to go up or down, whether the gun will lock open when empty or not, etc.

The only reason I see to change your EDC would be for reasons like seasons, weather or on occasion. I wouldn't wake up and pick Glock because it's Friday, slingshot because it's Monday or the 1911 because it's Sunday.

If your trained with that firearm it shouldn't matter too much. But JohnKSa said it well. I wouldn't want to worry about things like safety or the hammer and such in a SD situation. Don't change it too often. But I believe it's good to also keep your guns in rotation here and there. Wouldn't want one of them to feel left out. ;)

I have a few guns, but mostly I carry one of my Glocks. This winter has been a G23, and when it gets warm I switch to the G26...keeps my familiar and confident, plus I have by far the most shooting with my Glocks and they are second nature to me. I think it is a good idea to keep it consistant.

When I used to carry a 1911 thats all I would carry,Now that I rarely carry a 1911,It does not bother me much to switch out a bit.I just dont use safeties,
Glocks,Kahrs, decocked cz's,revolvers, ect.I shoot quite a bit and am more than familliar with all mine.My only fear would be to under stress forget a safety.

Might be a good idea to stay within platform, i.e., double action revolvers, etc. Variety of caliber can be had (according to need or preference) within a familiar framework.

I would also add that going between different firearms often means going between different equipment.

IMO when Tex Grebner shot himself, the root cause was switching back and forth between equipment that was functionally different, and the confused muscle memory that same about from that.

No, nor is it wise to change the method of carry.

Closest I come to changing the carry method is while hunting, then I carry a rifle, but my cc revolver is still in my pocket.

Comes in handy when you're crawling through the grass stocking antilope and come nose to nose with a rattler, that happened to me season before last.

I sometimes change guns, but only with the same manual of arms and I don't do it on a whim, I usually need a reason like the primary gun needs repairs or some custom work or something of that nature. I remember reading a post from a guy on another gun forum talking about he switches back and forth between a Glock 19, a SIG P229, a Kimber Ultra Carry, etc. Seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

While I'm not wedded to any one particular gun, I do primarily carry guns of the same basic platform with the same manual of arms between them (S&W revolvers). Something that I think is often overlooked when choosing a carry platform is the variety of sizes and calibers available within that particular platform. Platforms with wide varieties of sizes and calibers available include S&W revolvers, Ruger revolvers, 1911's, and Glocks among others.

I switch between two modes of carry -- 1. Mostly, 1911ish pistols, single action, thumb safety where down is fire and up is safe and 2. Sometimes double action revolver or semi-auto with no safety, so it's just pull the trigger.

I stopped carrying a wonderful carry gun, a SW 3913 because the safety was backwards, up for fire and down for safe. That was a recipe for trouble given my preference for 1911 style guns.

I switch depending on where i'm going and what i'll be doing.

Heck i've changed shirts/holsters and guns because they do or don't feel right that day.Three nights ago i had my Glock 22 sitting next to me,tonight i have my Sig 220 sitting on the desk.Tomorrow i may have my H&K sitting here.

Now i do have a dedicated camping/boating/woods gun (S&W 686 4 inch),all other guns in my collection get rotated more than my shoes do.Thats like saying i have a carry gun and a range gun,no they should be one and the same, this and the whole idea of having a safe queen.

I have shooter grade Glocks and i have a B-B-Q gun(well in my eyes it is),but they all have been shot, carried and basicly broken in.

Yup, that's about the only thing that knocks a gun out of my carry rotation. I'm good with the standard 1911 safety or no safety. It's them bass ackward safetys that make them good guns for range use. My thumb goes straight to where the safety should be and sweeps down.

It is for me.

I have a three gun carry rotation. Which one I carry on any particular day is dependent on how I'm dressed. I have no trouble putting my finger in the proper position on any of them. I have no problem getting any of them into action.

YMMV
