I was looking at gunbroker and seeing if there was any NAA mini top breaks listed and I got the idea for a Ruger Bearcat sized top break. Seems like it would be a fun plinker. Good idea or bad? Have any similar sized top break 22lrs be made in the past. I know H&R made them, but were they not larger?

I'd buy one.
While I don't mind the slow process of ejecting fired cases for centerfire cartridges (even with my 8-shot Blackhawk), it's a bit fiddly and irritating with .22 rimfire cartridges.

The h&r 999 is a .22 topbreak is say its more single six sized but its also da. Mines pretty beat up but it was a bargin.

At one time I posted on another forum the possibilities of a small caliber center fire top break single action with a spur trigger, much like a recreation of the S&W guns of another era. Absolutley no practical use for such a revolver other than a fun gun to shoot.

The only problem I have with the Bearcat as it stands is the price (for what it is-basically a "just for fun" thing). Would making a top-break version lessen the price (I doubt it). Otherwise, IMO, it's still $500+ for "a toy".

Meh, that isn't a HUGE issue. for lots of us 'toys' dominate our collections and purchases. I was looking at a $1000+ mares leg repo 1887 cuz I grew up on T2 and I needed it.

The trick is with high priced toys to make something that has a wide enough customer base to make it worth while.

Bob,

Between the Model 1 1/2 .32 and the two .38 models, S&W made well over 200,000 break top spur trigger guns and they are seen at most bigger gun shows, so if you want one and don't demand near new condition, you should be able to get one for around $350.

James K,

Yeah, thanks for that but I was really "just supposin' more than really being serioius about getting one. Though if brand new, polished/matt stainless steel? Hmmmmmm.

I assuming you're talking Bearcat size . . .

I'd buy one if it was along the lines of the smaller top break Smiths that were in .32. I actually think that if it was well made (i.e. not a lot of polymer) it could be a very good "kit gun". I'd like to see on in DA/SA. Something with what I'll call "classic lines".

I think the main problem is the expense of R & D, set up costs, etc. . . . the price would probably be "up there'. The only thing it would have over the S & W kit guns would be the top break though. A lot for a company to gamble on if the market isn't there.

I like my vintage super Bearcat - it's the one pistol that my wife likes to shoot. A top break in the smaller size might very well appeal to the ladies as well?

It's certainly an interesting thing to ponder - glad you posted this thread TennJed.

Although I and I am sure some others would like to see Ruger make a faithful (somewhat), copy of the S&W Schofield in a large caliber, I do not know if a Ruger in .22 LR could get past the historical impression that small caliber, top-breaks were not quality or reliable arms.

.

I like the 1-1/2 S&W better than my BC.

The BIN on this .22 S&W is $450

Yes it would sell!
The main troubles with the Bearcat are #1 the price!
#2 grown men's fingers don't fit the triggerguard! Yes it's small and cool but not a quick gun to get into action!
A mini Top Break would sell just because of the mechanical complexity.

Bedbugbilly writith: I'd like to see on(e) in DA/SA. Something with what I'll call "classic lines".

Th avantage of a single action only revovler is smaller frame and spur trigger. The small gun often has a trigger guard that some men with sausage fingers can't get their fingers positioned quickly. The spur trigger eliminates thast problem.

I wish Ruger or S&W would make a top break .44 Special, they'd sell a lot of them.

Smith & Wesson did make a top break "repro" a few years ago. They were very expensive (much more than an Uberti or successor Beretta), and didn't sell well.
