If you CCW how much if any time do you spend researching your "carry" rounds or do you simply buy whatever is the cheapest FMJ or cheapest Hollowpoint?

Do you attempt to research the round or do you simply accept that it will probably do the job?

I voted any box but I do engage in some research. The problem is that I don't buy ammo on the web but prefer to go local and I have to take what ls available. Usually I can find an SD round with good stats. If not I don't just settle for less but wait until something good comes in. I never run out of SD ammo so I can wait and watch for the good stuff.

It depends on the gun, for example, even ball ammo will stop a threat quick out of a .45ACP, but I want the best I can find when I carry my .38 snubbie.

I all ways like to check on the internet and compare the weights and velocity. Check you tube sometimes to see if there's any expansion tests, if not I go and do some water test my self.

XD GUNNER, about summed it up for me.

I did not vote, as the option first hand, or the experience of a co- worker was not given. With the exception of my night-stand gun I carry 158Gr. JHP's, or SWC's in my .357 Magnum revolvers. As I now live in a town home with a common wall my night stand revolver is loaded with the 38 special +P FBI rounds.

Everyone should do at least some real world tests, as not every gun will work with every brand of ammo, especially with semi-autos. Accuracy will also vary. If you're not up to doing some wet phone book or water jug tests, at least pick a few different types of ammo and see what is the most reliable and accurate in your gun.

Just use my 44spec reloads. So no grabbing box. Haven't bought a box of factory in years and years. Nor need to test in 'materials'. Do test loads for accuracy in my gun of course as it is most important to hit what you aim at!

Anything store bought works for going and carrying in public.:barf: Any other time I have my own reloads. Yes I do switch back and forth.

I used to buy Hydrashoks reguarly for my 45 but I think they're gone now. I believe that the three most important things in ammo for SD is reliability, accuracy, power.

In order for me to have confidence in some politically correct factory rounds of ammo, I would have to abandon lead boolits for awhile and go on a testing regimin for some GD or whatever...this would be ok if the economy were better but it isn't so since I KNOW where my lead RN prints, it seems to me that the prudent thing to do is to carry my lead reloads.

I have never had a mis fire from store bought ammo, altho I do have a .357 round that did misfire as a lucky charm thingy.

We shoot dead animals to find the best ammo. I like penetration and a 45 acp does it for me. No HPs in my 1911 altho I have shot them I dont trust them to go bang every time or feed every time as the FMJ does. I will not carry it if I think it may not work when needed.

I would not hesitate to carry a reload either. Whos going to tell? How can anyone prove you reloaded it?

I just use whatever hollow points I can find from a reputable maker, the cheaper the better. although lately I've been keeping the 92fs loaded with hardball since I shot up all the hollowpoints. That money needs to be spend elsewhere right now

First, I think that the poll is a bit messed up, since those aren't the only choices.

I'll use any reputable ammo that's reasonably available at a decentl price. By reputable, I mean one of the top loads designed for SD. Gold Dot, HST, Golden Sabre, or comparable. They'll all work reasonably well, and all will likely be hard to differentiate without very specific, and very detailed testing.

Right now I'm carrying HST's in a .40 S&W, and Gold Dots in a .38 special. I've no doubt that either will perform well if needed.

I have a large supply of Winchester Ranger ammo for every one of my carry guns, supplimented by a few other premium defense rounds such as Federal 9BP, Black Hills HP and Hornday TAP...

Not only has Massaad Ayoob specifically endorsed these as wise choices, but on my farm I've killed several small animals with each brand/caliber in an effore to retreive the expanded round and attempt to judge lethality....

of course, these are no "real" scientific tests but its the best I can do...

I stick with names like Speer Gold Dots or Federal Hyda-shoks. Beyond that, I don't really do any research. Price isn't a factor so I guess I pick based on reputation and availabilty.

Voted no. I've used Hornaday Ammo for years hunting. I trust Hornaday. That being said I shot a Poplar tree about 4" around and the round left a nasty hole in it.

I let some reputable folks narrow the field a bit, then I test a few of those rounds to see what works well in my pistol. Then I buy a bunch of it, and shoot it...and buy a bunch more

I still have a whole bunch of Winchester Ranger +p that work really well in my 9mm and .45acp carry pistols.

I have a bunch of DPX in .45acp, and am in the process of testing it in my carry .45s. I carry it in one of my revolvers, and am also testing it in my .380 LCP and 9mm PM9. So far, so good.

I've been reading good things about HST--perhaps one day I'll find out if it works in my pistols, and if so, buy a whole bunch of it. But at this point, that's a "what-if"...
