Do you have a lawyer lined up?

I stumbled upon some threads regarding actual HD situations, and the insuing police questioning after a shooting.

The consensus is that you should immediately tell the cops that you want to cooperate, but are shaken up and want to have a lawyer present before any questioning OF ANY SORT occurs.

I put myself in this situation and realize that I don't have a lawyer I could call to handle that situation. The last time I used a lawyer was for a real estate closing, and he's not the right type of guy to handle a criminal investigation.

I suspect that most law-abiding citizens don't have a criminal defense at the tip of their tongue or even access to any attorney at 2:30AM on a Wednesday morning.

What do you do and how do you protect yourself?

I am a criminal defense lawyer.

But I have a number of colleagues/friends that I'd call if something horrible happened involving me. Similarly, all my friends and many of my acquaintances have my home, office and cell numbers in case anything happens to them. I'm happy to give the info out (no one's abused it so far), because I'd sure hate it if someone I know got himself in trouble by explaining something the wrong way because he didn't think to call me to come sit with him.

(How to find a lawyer has been discussed here many times before, should anyone ask.)
