do YOU drive the speed limit?

So back where I grew up is a well known highway that circles the city of Atlanta. This highway, Interstate 285, is known to most residents simply as "the Perimeter". Seems a group of college students (at least one of them is a GA Tech student, not sure about the rest) decided to show the city of Atlanta how arbitrary and pointless the posted speed limits are on this particular road.

What you see in this video does seem dangerous but none of the danger is directly posed by the students themselves. They're merely obeying the law; any actions taken by other drivers to circumvent this which endangers the lives of others on the road is solely the responsibility of those other drivers. But it's obvious that doing this causes problems and considering the road rage that so many people around the nation exhibit, it's obviously pretty risky.

go with the flow.........

slower traffic keep right

and could still get a traffic ticket for inattentive driving or creating a hazard while going the speed limit.

Bunch of morons. But they do make a point that doesn't get stressed enough. People who drive slow thinking they are being perfect, safe and follwing the speed limit actually cause more wrecks. If you tried to go 60 or 55 in the Houston city limits on the Loop or on any freeway inside the Loop, you would be run over. 65 ot 70 is what I typically do. Typically I go about 3 to 5 miles over the speed limit on the open highway outside major cities.

To keep this post gun related, I will say that idiots who hold up lanes like those morons (especially the left or passing lane) are going to get themselves shot by road ragers.

This kind of civil "obedience" demonstration orchestrated by National Motorists' Association members was one of the factors that led directly to the repeal of the National Maximum Speed Limit, so this video has a proud heritage.

The federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices indicates that speed limits, for optimum safety, should be set at the 85th percentile speed - the speed which 85% of vehicles are travelling at or below. The Permiter speed limit is flagrantly underposted, undoubtedly part of the speeding-ticket traffic-tax racket.

Unintelligent as it may be, can you really say that it is propper for driving the speed limit to be dangerous due to the actions of other drivers?

Devil's advocate........the only thing that made it unsafe was that the other 99.99999% of the drivers were attempting to break the law in various ways. Maybe the highway patrol should just start pulling entire sections of traffic over and issuing citations for speeding, illegal passing, etc. until the law is obeyed or changed.

Actually, as far as speed limits go, I'm with the National Motorists Association:
Speed limit's should be set where 85-90% would drive at, or under, when under no restrictions.

glad i wasn't one of the many that they held up(wouldn't be reponsible for my actions).i can see doing the speed limit in the slow lane but in the passing lane.that's just being a idiot.

they're probably tree hugging hippies too!

i can see doing the speed limit in the slow lane but in the passing lane.that's just being a idiot.

Isn't the speed limit the same for both lanes in GA? It is in Florida. We have two lanes, but I've never seen more than one posted speed limit. I'll have to look tomorrow and see if we have a "slow lane" speed limit sign and a passing lane speed limit sign. I may have missed them all these years.

You better go down to 545.352. It lists the lawful speed limits.

Yes it has a list of lawful speed limits, but no where does it state that other speeds are unlawful.

If something is not prohibited by law then it is legal.

The only thing prohibited is driving faster than is reasonable and prudent.

The fact that you are driving over the posted limit can be used as evidence that your speed is unreasonable, but that does not in and of itself actually make it the case.

Street Racers

Around here street racing has become epidemic. I don't understand why they want to race through congested areas.

When I was a senseless teenager, I liked to push my luck with going fast. But I used to go out in the middle of the country. There was little or no traffic. Law enforcement never patrolled those areas. Stray cows and ditches were the only hazards.

Yes, it was a dumb thing to do. But at least I only endangered myself.

before I got into my career I always disregarded the limit. I've been a medic in Indy for awhile and hardly ever speed...even though I know MANY of the cops! One speeding ticket COULD get me fired and 1 reckless driving (over 25 mph) WILL get me fired.....I drive the speed limit in my car but when I ride my 2005 Suzuki GSXR-1000, it's a whole different story!!!:D

(wouldn't be reponsible for my actions)
The hell you wouldn't.

and could still get a traffic ticket for inattentive driving or creating a hazard while going the speed limit.

They had other people in the cars doing the filming. When was the last time you had a conversation with a passenger while driving above the posted limit?

The fact that you are driving over the posted limit can be used as evidence that your speed is unreasonable, but that does not in and of itself actually make it the case.
Has that ever worked in a Texas traffic court?
