Curious timing, Bluesman. I just sent an email to the RNC today, after reading that Governor Gilmore may replace Jim Nicholson as chairman. I'm not holding any hope for a response, but will post it if I get one. Here's the letter I sent:
To the staffer who is receiving this email:
It is my hope that this message does not stop at your desk, but is instead passed on to Chairman Nicholson and to Governor Gilmore. This message is of importance to the RNC and to president-elect Bush.
Nearly 11,000 people have signed a petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/monk/petition.html
This petition was not widely advertised or promoted, yet it garnered a substantial number of signatures by mere word of mouth.
The petition expresses the feelings of millions of gun owners. Some forty million or more gun owners cast their votes for Mr. Bush. Millions of them, like myself, donated money and took time off from work to campaign for Mr. Bush and other Republican candidates. We did so despite lingering doubts about the Republican Party's committment to the right to keep and bear arms.
To be sure, some 39% of gun owners voted for Al Gore. They were lied to, and led to believe that Gore supported the rights of gun owners. You and I know differently. However, should President Bush sign legislation further restricting gun ownership, that 39% may see such action as a vindication of Gore's lies.
The language of the petition is strong, but so are the feelings of those who signed it and millions of other gun owners who never saw the petition but who agree with it's tenor. We have reached a point where "compromise" is no longer an option.
Please heed the words and intent of this petition. It would be a sad day for me and millions of others if we are forced to leave the GOP.
Yours truly,
Richard Baker
