Do Walther P99 .40s still have slide lock problems?

If you have or have had this problem, could you briefly (or not so briefly) expand upon it?

Were you using 10 rounders, or hi-caps when it happened?

Has a switch from one to the other of these two mag types mitigated or corrected the situation?

What are the serial # ranges involved (or the aproximate date of purchase)?

How do you feel about the accuracy of this gun compared to other .40s you have shot and to the 9mm version of the P99 if you have both?

I have a 9MM P99. I have not had any lock back problems with the slide. I know of no one who owns a 40cal P99. I do not think that they are that popular. However, you can e-mail Earls Repair Shop. They are a big Walther dealer in Mass. of all places. Their E-mail address is: waltherusa@midiaone.net
Earl will answer any question you might have concerning the P99.

I have a P99 in .40 caliber as well as two in 9mm. My .40 is a later QPQ model and suffers from premature slide lock. I sent it to S&W who installed a stronger slide stop spring. Unfortunately, it did not solve the problem, particularly with higher performance loads. I believe the .40 P99's need stronger recoil springs or more slide mass. Mine ejects shells 20 feet or more. I recently let Sprinco use my pistols to fabricate recoil reducers with heavier springs. I am told that the prototypes were the most effective ever made. I'm anxious to try the finished product which should be available in 2-3 weeks. As much as I am disappointed with the .40 Walther, my 9mm's have been flawless. It's a shame, as the .40 P99 is the most accurate .40 I have fired. Hope this helps. God bless. Hugh

Thanks for the info.

Has anyone tried hicaps for the .40?
Did they work (stop the lockback)?

I'm curious as to this b/c I've seen some things about post-Klinton mags that make them seem more trouble prone.

Broken Arrow - Have you discovered a solution for the problem? I still think the springs are too weak. I spoke with Wolff Gunsprings, and they don't plan on having anything available this year. Sprinco said its device will solve the problem, but I manually worked the slide with the prototype in place and it was STOUT. It's really frustrating, as the P99 is a neat package and very accurate. BTW, the problem with mine occurred with the 10 rd. mags. My 9mm P99's are flawless with 10 and 16 rd. mags as long as they don't contain Speer Gold Dots. They will choke the 9mm in a heartbeat. God bless. Hugh
