Do they still make the .22 SP101?

Since the ruger sp101 in .22 with a 4" barrel is about the only revolver I can get in california that is 6 shots, is it worth the ~ $500?

Is the accuracy crap compared to the S&W 617? What about the trigger?

I dont know why but all the local gun store owners look at me like I'm stupid for wanting the 617 in 6 shot version instead of the 10 shot that is legal in here.

Would I be better off with an autoloader ... something like the Buck Mark since it will be my first handgun.

I can't comment on the SP101 but both my GP100's are as accurate as any of my S&W revolvers w/ my Ruger Blackhawk in .357mag being my most accurate revolver. My S&W629 comes in a very close 2nd but I think it is more me than the revolver.

HAve you tried a canvasing call /email of gun shops for used 17/617's ? A poster over at rimfirecentral was discussing that there was at least one NIB 6 shot 617 in CA last week in that price range..

p.s. The 101 is a smaller lighter gun ( significantly) than the 617. It's closer to a S&W mod 63. It also has a windage adjustable rear sight as compared to the S&W. While I think the SP is a fine revolver, I would hold out for a used S&W 17/617/317/63/34/if I was limited to one and had to pay $500 for it.

SP101(.22)isn't a lightweight!

I own an SP101(.22)with the short shroud barrel and, it isn't a lightweight(As it weighs 33 ounces!)and, this weight gives it good stability whenever shooting it!

Most rimfires, have a somewhat stiff trigger pull! However, the trigger will get better once the gun has been fired enough to enable it to smooth out! And, as are most Ruger's, the SP101 is built like a tank! I like mine!

I'm going to install a nice set of Houge's wood grips on my SP101(.22)!

I was just looking in the 2005 Ruger catalog today specifically for a .22 SP101, and found that it is not listed anymore.

I can't comment on the accuracy since the only Ruger revolvers I've ever owned have been single actions. I've always been a S&W wheelgun fan, but after shooting my friend's SP101 3-1/4" .357 mag, I really want one. I find the frame size to be right between a J and K-frame S&W, which is perfect for carry IMO.

I have a 6" 617 6-shot that I bought used. It was in kind of rough shape with surface rust on the trigger and hammer, and some marks on the exterior. I've polished, buffed, and replaced the missing rear sight assy, and made my $100 617 into a good looking, excellent shooter.

It's really a toss up between the Ruger and S&W. Both companies make outstanding products. If it were me, I'd look around and see what I found first. It kind of sounds like it's tough in CA for you, although you have a much longer list of handguns you can buy there than I can here in MA! I really don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

After looking at this thread, I checked Davidson's, and they don't have the SP-101 in .22 LR anymore either. I wonder if Ruger has discontinued it.

Which would be too bad. I am hardpressed to think of anyone who is still making a .22 LR double-action revolver in stainless.

I don't know if they are discontinued, but I just ordered a 4" .22 SP101 last Friday from Jerry's in PA thru my local shop. Had a few in stock at that time. (I also scored a .45 5 1/2 SS Redhawk at the same time....it was the last one! :))

You can usually find one , NIB or Mint on gunbroker or auction arms. Prices run mid 300's.( Assuming it's on the CA acceptable list.)

I have an SP101 (38/357) and (among other SW's) a SW686. No doubt about it, the 686's trigger is 100x nicer. However, once you get used to the rugers (its not bad, its just no where as nice as the SW) it'll turn in surprizingly nice groups as well.

The SP101(.22)has been discontinued by Ruger!

Yes, the Ruger SP101(.22)has been discontinued by Ruger! The short shroud barrel SP101(.22)was discontinued a few years ago! And, now, Ruger has finally discontinued the fully shrouded Barrel(.22)! As has already been noted, some of these .22's will be found in inventories(Until, they are gone!)so you better start looking, if you want one of these? I obtained this information, from the RENE!
