Do people get pulled over on purpose?

A relatively common topic for discussion on various gun boards seems to be getting pulled over by the police while carrying a concealed weapon. This probably sounds bizarre but sometimes I get the impression - and I'm not sure I can even say why - that some people are breaking traffic laws on purpose, hoping to get stopped while they are carrying. Maybe their eagerness to tell an officer they are carrying seems somewhat extreme and their stories about why they were stopped seem too fabricated. Does anybody else ever get the impression that, for some, having an opportunity to tell an officer they are carrying is very very important?

No. Nobody posts about how they drove today and didn't get a ticket. They only post when they get one and the cop does something dumb like ask me "Did you buy it new or used?" The trooper never even saw the gun or asked what it was. He was fishing because I was talking a blue streak and wasting his time with stories of my dad's days as a trooper, etc. He can't write tickets if he's standing on the side of the road listening to me. :) It would have been better if had been raining on him.

So I got a ticket a few months ago while I was carrying and I've been carrying since sometime in the last century. Before that ticket, the last one I got was in 1986. The way I drive, well, I deserve a ticket everyday. Heck, 80 in Virginia is reckless driving and the speed limit is 70 a lot of places.

Short answer: No. I don't think most people are that dumb.

Long answer:
Having a CHL is no guarantee that a LEO will give you a "thumbs up" and be lenient in regards to a traffic offense one has just committed. A several-hundred dollar traffic ticket (and the subsequent rise in car insurance rates, a marred driving record) would not be worth risking to most people just to seem "cool" to a LEO. I've been pulled over several times and it's getting a ticket and all of the ramifications thereof that are on the forefront of my mind rather than trying to impress the cop. When pulled over, I never even mention (unless asked) having a CHL or carrying (it's not required to disclose in my state). I could imagine someone getting pulled over, and trying to seem like a cool gun-toting dude in hopes of getting out of a ticket. But purposefully trying to get pulled over, it would take someone with emotional problems to do that.

Nope, I speed on purpose, getting pulled over is an unintended byproduct.

But, no, I do so not for the purpose of getting pulled over - have much better things to do with 15-30 minutes of my time.

In actuality, my driving has actually calmed down since getting my CCW, just don't want to deal with the irritation.

But yes, maybe perhaps there are people to whom it is worth a hundred bucks for a ticket to "show off." It happens.

I have wondered the same thing as the OP. But there is no logic in wanting to be pulled over so I just dismissed my musing as a random thought that was unlikely to be true.

This sounds close to the concept of the movie "Crash", which I found to be a little nutty.

While we never know what's on the mind of the individual, this is the first time I've heard of or considered this topic in relation to CC and being pulled over. Could be true in some cases. There's some really special people out there looking for attention in all the wrong places.

But, considering some of the other strange things folks do and say, is it so strange to believe that there may be CC permit holders that so long to prove to the world that they are in the right to carry that they would intentionally commit a traffic violation to spark an LE encounter?

The more I consider it, the more I believe that it's probably, and most likely true in some cases. But unless the individual admits it, we'll never know.

If enough walk to the edge, someone will jump!!

Does anybody else ever get the impression that
To a certain degree, I do believe that someone would do this.
Short answer: No. I don't think most people are that dumb.
Not only that dumb but some own guns. ... ;)

Example;
A couple of weeks ago, a buddy and I had just pulled out of a parking lot and had driven about two blocks when a city LEO, pulled us over. My buddy said that it was probably for his tail light being out and then said; good, now I get to show him my CCW permit. I've been wondering how this would go ... :)
Now, if thinks it was good and looking forward to this opertunity, then my thought was that there might be others that would force it to happen.
By the way, it was the tail light that he got us for and really was not impressed by the show of the permit.

Be Safe !!!

I don't know about being happy to get pulled over to show off a concealed weapon (probably not much of a phenomenon in states in which you have to check in with the Sheriff to get a CCW), but my husband was pretty happy the first time he was stopped in a Wal-Mart by a concerned manager that heard about him carrying openly (totally legal in our state, county, and the town in which the store was located). He seemed excited to explain the law in great detail to the guy, who was totally clueless and just nodded. I didn't get what was so satisfying about it--guess he thinks he's educating the public or something. Pedantic man thing?

I do think some of the open-carry proponents carry openly in places where they expect, if not hope, that cops will confront them. I've been to some forums where the members essentially compare stories concerning how they educated the cops who stopped them. Drawing attention to yourself, when armed, seems really dumb to me.

I tend to agree with Carry 24/7. I think there are some people out there just begging for the attention, ala the individual walking down the street with his AK.

As an LEO in the only state without a CCL, per say, I can say that the times I've stopped individuals, almost certainly not on THEIR agenda, lol, with CCPs, I've not been impressed. Especially if they are indeed carrying. Not to say I'm against CC, I'm not, but one has to know the laws of the states they are traveling in, and know where the speedtraps are. With the advent of the internet, neither is a big secret.

As a side note, I've never cited anyone for UUW, which is the correct charge, for carrying concealed in this state, with a valid out of state CCP.

Anyone who's studied psychology even a little bit knows that the subconscious can be a very wily coyote... so...

"...sometimes I get the impression - and I'm not sure I can even say why - that some people are breaking traffic laws on purpose, hoping to get stopped while they are carrying..."

... Yeah... I hear you... Having a little obsession concerning LE officers as symbols of authority is fairly common...

Some people clearly like to push gun laws but I don't think many people are intentionally getting pulled over to show off their CCW.

I discovered a nearly fail safe method of not getting pulled over - obey traffic laws. Last ticket was over 20 years ago. :p I have no fun showing ANY documentation to LE, means something went south, and I don't like that idea.

Remember:

Most people don't want to admit to the stupid things they do while driving. As such, they don't want to give the REAL reason they got pulled over.

When people try to cover up the truth, they over-complicate the lie.

NO,

Don't need the hassle,

But where I live the police have these check points where they check for your insurance and drivers license and they always have it on the main street just down the street from my house, it kind of a choke point, you can't go any where you cant see it till you are right there and its to late:eek:so they got you:( they have them about 4 times a year at the same spot

Onward Allusion
Maybe if they are complete morons...

. . .That drive a jacked up pickup truck at 2X the speed limit , at night in the rain passing on a double yellow line with the high beams and driving lights on while cars are coming the other way. Extra points for a Calvin peeing on something sticker in the back window or some other bad attitude sticker / stuff hanging from the trailer hitch. Double extra points if it is a diesel with the tuning purposely set to "smoke" when they drive through stop and go traffic.

While it is unlikely these people make a conscious decision to get stopped, their generally antisocial behavior makes them much more visible to police and that results in a stop. I think guns are part and parcel of those that cultivate a Mr bad a attitude, so it would be more likely that a greater % of CC people get stopped vs a non CC.

There is a difference between a trouble maker that carries a gun and their non gun actions get them stoped Vs a generally law abiding citizen that goes 6 mph over the limit and just happens to be carrying a gun.

Been pulled over only once so far while having my concealed carry license and it was more of a hassle than when I got pulled over before the I carried. It took way longer than usual because he came back to the car after grabbing my drivers license/registration and asked what the carry license was for. He then asked for my firearm license and asked me what I was carrying. Told him a a snub nosed revolver and he instructed me to keep it holstered while he ran my information. Came back handed me my license and told me to have a good day, no ticket either. Point being I don't look forward to being pulled over, especially now that I carry.

Same thing in my town man, good thing is my buddys brother is a cop and I usually get the heads up of where they do the stops.
