Do-it yourself refinishing? Opinions?

(I originally posted this on the Smith Forum, but I'm looking for as many opnions as possible, so I'm also posting it here...)

I have a SS Kahr MK9 that I'd like to get refinished in a matte black. I've been getting quotes from various smiths/finishing outfits, and prices are running $150 - $200, plus shipping, insurance, etc.

I've been taking a hard look at possibly doing it myself, using the Teflon/Moly Oven Bake Gun Finish avaiable through Brownells. Cost: $25

Opinions?

I figure, I can try the Brownells, and if it doesn't work out, I can just send it to get professionaly refinished, and only be out $25.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with refinishing their guns, particulary with the Brownells Teflon product? How durable is it? Does it need to be reapplied?

Am I just being cheap?

Help!!!!!!

voodoo,
Besides the replies you may get with this topic, you might search for previous threads on similar topics under The Smithy. I was looking there the other day for tips on rebluing a pistol and there are also topics regarding the Brownell's oven bake finishes.

I've used the Brownells Matt Black baked-on finish on two pistols. It's easy to use and works quite well. Put on light coats and bake each one on well. Patience is a virtue here. It seams to hold up well, too.
Like you said, if you mess up or dont like it, you're not out much.

Good Luck,
Dave
