Do I want a Colt Gold Cup Trophy 1911?

I own 3 revolver and a Glock 29 so far. I like variety and I think it's time for an all steel pistol. Is the Colt Gold Cup Trophy a good 1911? Stainless steel is a must for me. Any other suggestions? I'm about to pull the trigger...

By all means! I was shooting one in the NRA Pistol Matches 35 years ago in the .45 cal. class. It was further accurized by a good smith, but was a sterling performer even before it was touched.

Still have it; Son-in-Law will inherit it.

Well who doesn't??? :D

You might want to check out Springfield Armory for stainless steel 1911s too.

The following stainless models might interest you.
1911 Mil-spec
1911 Loaded

This guide to 1911s might help too although it could easily give you 'analysis paralysis'...

You know what? Just go ahead and get the Colt.

I have to say no. The Colt Gold Cup is a good pistol, but Colt makes one that even better. Take a close look at the Colt Special Combat Government model. It's everything that the Gold Cup should be. Also it's available in 38 Super as well as the standard 45 ACP. Your dealer may have to special order one for you but it's worth the wait. :)

The Colt Gold Cup is an excellent pistol.

The one thing I would recommend is that you make sure you like the sights. I find the all black sights are not as easy to acquire as a the Novak 3-dot white sights or the night sights.

I see the standard Kimber recommendation. While they make pretty guns, I don't think they quality is nearly as high as Colts. As I've said before, when you see Kimbers used, they often have surface rust on the barrel. I haven't seen that on Colts. Also, if you believe what you read on the Internet, Customer Service @ Kimber has a lot of people dissatisfied.

YMMV.

Get a Kimber instead. They make more 1911s than anyone for a reason.

They make and sell more than anyone but that is because at this point they are a great marketing company that happens to sell 1911s. Their advertising drives their sales not the performance of the actual product. IMHO

The worst 1911s I've ever owned were a Colt Gold Cup Trophy and two different Kimbers. The Colt was 8 years ago when Colt was going through a rough period. I understand things are better now. I was also unimpressed with my Colt New Agent. I'll never waste my money on another Kimber as long as I live.

I've had nothing but great experiences with 1911s from Springfield, S&W, Sig and Ruger. My current #1 is a semi-custom Ed Brown which is in a different world altogether. The one I really regret selling was a scandium frame S&W 1911PD, the best "out of the box" 1911 I've owned.

As a first 1911, I think either Springfield or S&W would serve you well.
