Do I register heirlooms in CA?

I have one or two rifles that have been passed on to me. If I'm transporting them for any reason, and a LEO with a hard-on takes them out of my vehicle for any reason, and they do any kind of trace, and they're not registered to me, what will happen?

Under CA law, what is my responsibility?

Are different cities more lenient?

California does not have a registry for long guns. Even if you purchase a long gun new from a dealer, the serial numbers are not recorded with the Department of Justice. The only record of serial number is on the federal form 4473.

If a law enforcement officer were to run the numbers through CLETS (California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) it would be to determine if the weapons were reported stolen. Absent that, the officer would be obliged to return the weapons to you unless he suspected they had been involved in a crime or were otherwise illegally possessed or carried.
