I have put together a collection of rifles for hunting and I am interested in your input if I have covered my bases.
1. 222 Winchester model 70 heavy "varmint" barrel with 4x12 scope.
2. 243 Weatherby Vanguard with 3x9 scope
3. 7mm mag Weatherby Vanguard with 3x9 scope
4. 45/70 Marlin 1895 lever with open sights
I live in Az and feel I have covered my bases for any north American animal.

Yes, you have it covered. While I might want something a little bigger for the big bears a 7mag will get the job done.

Do you have a semi like an AR or AK incase you are attacked by super smart groundhogs who ride on the backs of porcupines and attack in mass while trying to take over the world. I am tired of zombies and this is just as likely to happen maybe even more so.

Not sure which answer you're looking for
A: absolutely you have bases covered you could even get rid of the 243
or
B: heck no you're not even close you need to have a rimfire and 30 cal and a pistol caliber carbine and and and.

I'm not sure what the laws are like in AZ but you have your centerfire cartridges down pat. just about anything one of your cartridges can't do, the next one up can do better than what's out there.

however, there is still room for a 12 gauge shotgun and who on earth owns more than 2 rifles and does not yet own a 22lr?

Should you feel the need for speed, you could add:

.22 WMR CZ 455...what the heck, get the .22LR and .17 HMR for it too.

Lightweight .223 Rem Tikka T3 Lite; as a varmint walkabout rifle (one in .243 Win would also work, but a bit more "buck for the bang").

While the groundhogs and their mounts are a creditable threat, My bigger concern is the squirrels. Not only are they fast, they are unpredictable, hence the term, "squirrelly".

And they have a track record from the Robo Squirrel going after that one cereal, to the ones that help with your heartburn, but steal your peanuts....

Raccoons, now, they will only steal your van, and get pizza!

.22 Rimfire, unless you make up super light loads for your .222.

Your 7mm is a good choice, personally I prefer a .30 but that's jut me.

The .45-70 in a strong modern gun like the Marlin is tough to beat, except for long range shots. You can shoot a .45-70 quite accurately at long ranges, but its something that takes more skill than most people are able to take the time to develop these days.

If you think you need something with more punch at longer ranges than what you currently have, take a look at the .375H&H. Its not just for Africa. With 235 & 270 gr bullets it has essentially the same trajectory as the .30-06 with 150 & 180gr bullets, but hits ...a bit harder. Not cheap, not for everyone but if you have a need (or just a desire) it gets things done!

your collection covers everthing pretty well already. You might consider a round in between the .243 and the 7mm Mag. Something with a heavier bullet than the .243, and less recoil than the 7mag. The 6.5x55mm Swede is an awesome performer, flat shooting, low recoil, and 140/160gr bullets penetrate well. The modern equal is the .260 Remington.

very good point on the 6.5 swede, 44 AMP. that is next on my list of things I shouldn't buy, but really, really want list.

thanks guys. I do have a 12 ga shotgun and rimfire rifles that I probably should have added. I also have a 30/30 Winchester lever I probably should have added.

oh, well in that case I think you're pretty well rounded.

a 6.5 still couldn't hurt for medium range application but that's just because right now I'm chomping at the bit for a 6.5.

you need more, like me:D

20 vartarg
22 long range /long/short
222 remington
223 remington
243 winchester
25-06 remington
6.5 creedmoor
270 winchester
7mm-08 reminton
7mm mauser
30-30 winchester
32 winchester special
308
30-06
45-70 govenrment
38 special
44 remington mag

then there's a 357maximum and a 22br and a 257 bob ai and.....

You dont have anything in .30 caliber....you must be un-American. J/k...looks like you've got all the bases covered. Now buy some oddball stuff.

From what I can tell, you are pretty well covered. Especially if you have shotguns and rimfires. Now how about some surplus military rifles? Maybe a 91/30?

I'd say you should get a .22LR or .22 Magnum, though. Better for squirrels. Even the .222 would blow them apart and you wouldn't get the meat.

I tend to think of it from a survival standpoint: can you cleanly kill anything in North America and still salvage the meat? To be entirely fair, all you'd need just to satisfy that is a .22LR and a .308 or .30-06, and you've already covered the upper range very effectively. You just need something for the extreme small end.

With a name like Dale Gribble it seems that you might need something super tacticool to round out your collection. AR in .300Blk?
