Do Biometric/Fingerprint Safes work?

Does anyone have any experiance with so called biometric / fingerprint handgun safes ? My brother-in-law wishes to purchase his first handgun but has concerns because of his toddler. He wants to keep it in a safe. (his gun... not his toddler) I suggested he look into the bio safes for speed of access but I have no experiance with them. Any comments are appreciated.

They work equally as well as biometric devices installed directly onto a weapon to prevent unauthorized persons from firing the gun.

Nobody seems to like the idea of something that unreliable on a gun, but most people don't give it a second thought when it comes to the quick access safe that they secure their gun in.

Although technology has gotten better, mechanical locks have been, and will always be, more reliable that their electronic counterparts.

I would avoid electronics as the ONLY way to open a safe. Fine if you have a backup. Too much can go wrong, particularly if the power supply is interupted or an EMP or similar.

i work in the comuter industry with biometrics and as long as there is an alternate method of opening the safe there should be no problem. You never want to give a device complete control that will leave you without access in the event of a loss of power or malfunction. Even the most basic biometric readers, ie microsoft password manager, use manually entered passwords as a back up.

I bought a small fingerprint safe at a gun show from a small co. in oregon

really nice people. The technology works. if I rember right the chip holds up to 13,000 individual finger prints so you put in your print many times from different angles so if you are under stress and your print dosent index correctly or if you are at an odd angle the box will still open. I have never put a stopwatch on it but it opens in under two seconds.
I did have to have the solenoid replaced after about a year I dont know what happened but it was hanging up or something and i was having to try 2 or 3 times to open the box so i called jory and he offered to come out to fix it but I had some time off and didnt want to wait anyway so he let me come out to his shop and after some testing he installed the solenoid good as new.

Go to Cabelas.com

Look up the Inprint Pistol Vault.

$299.

I am the mechanical designer of the safe. That's my baby.

Does it work? You bet. Programmable to 16 different fingerprints.

A few seconds to read and the door pops into your hand. Your weapon, a second or two later.

What are it's weak points?

An 8lb sledge hammer.

Like all "portable" gun safes and most upright, in your closet safes, they are all vulnerable to the brute with a sledge.

Keep 'em in an area that prevents a full swing with a hammer, and keep 'em powered with fresh batteries every few months (forget the AC adaptor, unless you live in an area that never suffers from power loss) and you are good to go.
