Do any New Yorkers buy ammo at Walmart?

I'm curious if anyone from NY buys ammo at Walmart because I went in this evening to pick up a box of .38 spl and was very surprised that for the first time I was asked to show my pistol permit.
The employee very rudely told me it was store policy when I questioned him. I didn't feel like arguing with this guy because I had more important things to do than waste another breath on a conversation with him.

Has anyone else experienced this before? They may never get my money again.

Its nothing new, they have been asking for my permit for over 20 years now.
Its no big deal to me, but it doesn't matter much anymore as I reload almost all of my handgun calibers.

I get my ammo online ,much easier that way .
BTW Walmart is giving up the 'greeters' .Now the unemployment numbers will go up !

the register screen prompts them to ask:

rifle or pistol

i just say rifle, before they even ask

or.....i just check out at the sports counter, where
the guys are a little more flexible....problem is that
you should be ready to show the receipt when you walk out
(but you are on camera all the time anyway, so they know)

it is the law in ny that the permit has to be shown for
pistol rounds, but since there are so many rifles that
take pistol rounds, you might be able to not show your permit

It just really got to me because the way he said it and I had never been asked to show it before in this store. I feel like it should have been posted so it's obvious.
Now that I think about it I'm not surprised, I shouldn't have such high expectations.

Next time, tell them "machinegun". Hilarity will ensue.
IIRC, I did that at a western NY Wally World once. No hilarity, but the guy smirked at me.
